I've always wanted to try one and now I've found an inexpensive Bb trumpet to take home and play with. I need to get a beginner's mpc. what is the equivalent of a Selmer C* for the trumpet.

I'm after the sound that Miles has. I've been told its a Harmon mute without the center. I've found 100's of different looking Harmon mutes and not all are metal. Any help on this one?

TIA!

Bach 7c or Schilke 11. Send me a PM with shipping address and I'll sell you a mouthpiece and a likely specimen from my crate of mutes for $0.00. Glad to help.

I agree. The Bach 7C is likely the S80 C* equivalent and I prefer a Schilke 11 because it's practically the same size as the Bach but the inner rim is a little more rounded, which I prefer. However, that's me. For many if not most the Bach is great.

If Mr. Fixit can hook you up with a mute, great. What you are looking for is a basic Harmon without the center stem, just like you were told.

Thanks guys. I will take you up on that mute too, Mr Fixit. Send me a PM with info on the mpc's.

Wow! Thanks for the toys!

I liked the metal mushroom shaped mute the best. That buzz is the sound I'm after. I'm still uncertain about the metal Harmon (tack shaped) mute. I don't think I play well enough to get the sound intended from that mute. I'll keep at it. The wooden mute i remember from HS and College. never cared for them.

Thanks for the selection! It answered 2 or 3 questions and created 1,000,001 more :D

My main instrument has always been sax, but I've also played drums - not long enough to completely rot my brain, but some. Anyway...

I played a bit of trombone and french horn in HS (some 30+ years ago). I remember the ombouchure and what it should feel like. I seem to be overblowing on the trumpet and the mpc seems small for me. Should I look for a larger mpc or just tighten my lips a bit more? Suggestions?

Bubble mute is the Milesesque type (and is what is normally meant by a "harmon mute" spome buble style some more flat on the end, all with the little cup on a stem). The center cup should be adjustable (and can be pulled right out if you wish). There is no particular "one right way" on these things though at the extremes you can snarl up the intonation a bit. All the way in is usually just fine. The "mushroom" mute is a manufacturer's attempt at a do all 3 in one deal. Though it's a Harmon (the company) mute its not a harmon mute... The top part snaps off (since it originally refused to stay put I may have it jammed on in a big way now) and you have a straight mute, a metal cup mute with the top and the base, and a metal plunger mute with just the top. The wooden one is intended as a practice mute- simply quieting the sound in a big way so you don't **** off the neighbors when running the 43rd iteration of a tripletongued chromatic scale at two AM. And you're more than welcome- Henry
