Easy: JUST LISTEN!

Put on your favourite funk CDs and jam along until it feels and sounds good. James Brown, P-Funk, Maceo, Stevie Wonder. Also try Stanley Turrentine or Horace Silver (and many many others for straight ahead Jazz).

Hint: Emphasis on beats 1 and 3 (as opposed to 2 and 4 in rock and roll). Lots of Blues scales/pentatonic scales. Relax and groove, never ahead of the beat (funk is cool, not anxious).

HAVE FUN

I'd also suggest listening to and playing along with King Curtis, Dave Sanborn, Michael Brecker on Brecker Brother recordings, Tower of Power, etc.
Generally key signatures will be concert e,a,d,g, so getting familiar with those keys will be important.
Emphasis is often on rhythm as oppossed to lengthy melodies.
Good luck and have fun.
