View Full Version : Suggestion: Thread Tools -> Ignore Thread

Summary. Other forums with vBulletin have a Thread Tool feature, Ignore Thread. Perhaps this feature prevents the thread from showing up in a New Posts request. I would like to see this feature implemented here because it might be capable of defusing some of the contentious postings that seem to occur.

Discussion. Much of the lively repartee between and among posters in certain threads seems to do with what some see as spam, meaningless blather, non-sax related, <fill in here> postings. Often the contentions do not seem to be because of a disagreement on saxophone issues, but rather on threads/postings themselves. Some think threads/postings should have relevance, others don't care and think anything goes. This feature could allow both views to coexist.

In my case the most highly traveled threads don't interest me and I don't normally view them. This is not a problem except that I use New Posts a lot and these threads, polls and the like get a lot of traffic and are often the first dozen or more threads to show up in New Posts. This feature could remove these unwanted threads and probably reduce the amount of time that I spend reviewing content.

It doesn't take much of a glance at a thread to know whether it is likely to hold my interest. Often a thread will devolve to a state that perhaps it would be best to just ignore it if possible. This feature would allow the user to tailor the content better and I think make a better user experience.

The staff has been investigating new vBulletin Plugins to be added to the forum in the near future. The plugin you speak of has caught our attention among other and it's likely that it will be added to the forum but first, we have other priorities like fixing current bugs, and we want towait for a new version of vBulletin to be released before installing new plugins.

I thought that I read that there was a way to ignore all posts to the Lounge forum, but I can't find that info. Was I dreaming when I thought I read that?

Thanks!

Actually, to answer Jorns question and for others whom may be interested; It is possible to make the SOTW Lounge forum invisible. To do so, you need to contact a forum Administrator to set that up for you.

Then again: wouldn't it be simpler just to ignore threads that don't interest one? No one would care if various folks do in fact use an "ignore thread" feature, but -- so what? We all have a built-in "ignore thread" feature, it seems to me.

Yes, for instance there are several threads that I'm ignoring.

There's two kinds of ignoring:

Actively ignoring: read the stuff, have a laugh don't post.'
Inactively ignoring: click on it once, figure after a couple of posts that it's too boring to continue. Don't click on it again.

I prefer doing the former, that way I'm sure not to miss the wheat in the chaff.

Wow!!!!! Kim "unsubscribed" me from the Lounge and I am very happy!!!!

I can only spend 5 or 10 minutes on the forum a day, so this option makes so much sense for me. It makes scanning for new posts extremely easy. I may miss out on some threads that interest me, but the benefits outweigh the costs.

Thanks Kim!

Makes sense to me. But if we have the option of deleting more forum areas I think this usage of that feature makes sense for some:

You're welcome - However I should point-out that by the time I got your request to get unsuscribed from the lounge(yesterday morning), you were already unsuscribed... I think it's Chris that did it. Whichever, as long as you are happy with the changes, that's all that matters. :)

Just not to confuse everybody, the plugin requested by Bub99 would allow members to chose and better organize the discussions that they are following by showing specific forums through the New Post (http://forum.saxontheweb.net/search.php?searchid=2623298) link, but all forum areas will still be viewable and accessible to them.

This is quite different from getting 'unsuscribed' from the forum Lounge - First off, we cannot do that for every sngle forums... well we could but it would take a huge ammount of work, tampering with the forum's permissions, etc - This said, getting 'unsuscribed' from the forum Lounge does that you do not have access to that area, you cannot view it or any posts/threads inside there. It's like that area doesn't exist for you.

Can I please ignore the Hot Topics sub forum entirely? :D

I'm understanding of some members desire to ignore certain threads, topics, or other members.

I am wary however, of anything that actively encourages and enables us to splinter off into factions and whatnot, because the whole purpose of this FORUM is to be exposed to ideas you mightn't otherwise consider.

Better to read something and ignore it, than stick your head in the sand and only listen to like minded individuals.

If you want to ignore everyone you disagree with, run for office.
