A few months ago I got my P mauriat from sax alley,,what a horn! It sounds fantastic,I couldn´t be happier.Tim was really helpful putting me on the right track when deciding which Mauriat would be the right one for me..I´m using a Fred Rast mpc also following Tim´s advice,I also recommend this mpc,it´s just really good. The set up for this horn was just the best I have ever seen I must say.
Now I´m at a point where I want to try for a new sound with this horn if possible..I´m now looking for a brighter sound and I´m hoping to hear some comments and advice from whoever who has tried any of these combinations before.
Would a jody jazz Dv or a guardala crescent mpc give this horn that extra punch or brightness I´m looking for?.
Thanks very much in advance.
Lu.

I have played a JJ DV on alto for the last 2 years and it will definatly give you more of a brighter sound.I cant speak for the Crescent as I have never played one.I have since moved to RPC's on all my horns and really dont plan to look for any other M/P for awhile.

You are probably better off with a Guardala and you'll save about $300.

Reading about the Guardalas I came up with the Super king mpc..,Would this be a good option? The crescent seems to be the darkest of the Guardalas.
Thanks.

The only time I play tested a PM I had a Crescent with me . Since I usually play a Link, the Guardala Crescent is closest to that sound. I wasn't really that impressed by the horn (overpriced), but the sound was ok with the Crescent.
Going from some small tip opening to a Super King might be difficult, even the Crescent is like a 7* Link and the Super King is something insane like a 10*.

I like the JJ DV but for price go with guardala, order a JJ to try and if you don't like it return minus shipping charges doesn't get much easier then that

I played a super king for a while. This isn't where I'd go for a little more edge, this is where I'd go for the most ridiculous edge ever put into a mouthpiece. Not a very versatile piece.

8-) im, using a guardala lt king, that equates to a 116 opening, more open than the crescent ,but i find it quite versatile can sound mellow and when pushed a good r,n,b mouthpiece, although the piece is quite open, it is surprisingly easy to blow so if you do consider one,it may be worth a try, good projection!

Here (http://www.jazzimprov.com/misc/JIMPEval_V7N2.pdf) is a nice write-up with several players comparing several different LT models.

Thanks a lot for all the info,I do appreciate it.After talking to the guys at wwbw it looks like the guardala studio model is going to be the one,IŽll just have to get used to it.,I also read very good comments about the rpc mpcs as being more versatile than the studio.

I played a Guardala King for age but after some time started to feel it was to bright up the top end, I have over the last few months been playing on a Guardala Studio mouthpiece and absoulty love it its has a great sound not to bright but punchy if i need it. hope that helps

Thanks a lot for all your comments,IŽm getting a guardala studio and also an Rpc mouthpiece,IŽll try both, the problem is I like many different sounds.I have a Rast that I use for jazz that sounds just awesome.I love the Brecker sound and the Pee Wee ellis too.IŽll be using them for a while and see which mpc IŽm more comfortable with.

jjdv will give any horn more punch IMO. I really dig my JJdv 8* but I am playing in a loud band. If you don't need to be loud then I wouldn't choose a dv.

Could anyone give some insight about the main differences between the jody jazz dv a guardala studio and the Rpc hard rubber mouthpieces with a big oppening,It just seems the hard rubber mpcs can never give the punch a good metal mpc can give you.

Never tried a DV, but I've been through the LT Guardalas and recently got a RPC 115B that had been refaced by Brian Powell from 119 down to 116. I liked the Studio at first, but then its sound seemed too 'generic'. MBII is looser with more color in the sound. Didn't like the Crescent or King. I like the SuperKing best, but requires more air and control to get the most versatility out of it. But in terms of volume and punch, this RPC blows away the Guardalas. And I can get a fat, husky sound that I don't find in the Guardalas. Darker and fuller, with edge, but can be plenty bright when pushed. I can get a nice edge even while subtoning. And I can't imagine a better piece for getting that overdriven rock'n'roll tone.
