I have a kolert tenor, sn 6000xx. Think the serial number puts manufacture in 1959. However the bell appears identical to "the Kolhert" model, which started production in the early 60"s. My question is, did the "good" Kohlerts after '57 have the manufacture year stamped on the bell, or did they look the same as the later Kohlerts, post 1960? Also, anyone know the difference between the 57's, and he 58-69 year horns? The horn has rolled tone holes and plays well, with however some intonation issues. Would appreciate any clarification you can provide. Thanks, Yancy

Just to make your life more confusing....

I have a "The Kohlert" with either a 58xxx or 59xxx SN (have to go look but it's one of those). No year date on the bell. It resembles the '57 model in all respects and has lacquered brass instead of plated keys....

It's another project horn I bought to rebuild and resell but it is one of the most resonant horns I've come across, and has more a Coltrany than German vibe even with its reso-less, old pads....

Does it have the "man in the moon" neck brace? That would put it 58-59. The only difference in the 57 and the 58-59 models is an improvement in the low Bb pinky key. the later models had a different more modern looking neck brace and a more rounded low C key. Other than that still basically the same. I have played Kohlert models made from the fifties throught the mid sixties and all of them play very well to excellent IMO.

Guys thanks for the info. This horn has the man in the moon neck, and lacquered brass keys, Its in quite good shape, and I got it at a pawn shop for not much money. It has conn resopads,(the originals I think) with no resoantors, and plays too dark for me as is, but there's good tone quality there, and I'm considering whether to spend the cash to have it repadded with plastic or metal domed resos Anyway, I'll keep you posted. Thanks, Yancy

How much do you think those 57xxx to 61xxx are worth? Are they professional model Kohlert horns? What's different between those do have year 55, 57, 58, 59 engraving on bells and those do not have years engraving on bells?
