I have recently picked up the clarinet again and I put on the mouthpiece I had been using with the same reeds. Its B45 and some 4 Vandoren. I coudnt play it without fuzz and the it wasnt playing clear. It played when I put barely any air through it and when I put proper air support behind it it either blew shut or the reed stopped working. I am not too sure. Should I find a more open mouthpiece? stronger reeds? I am a bari sax player and am laying Bb clarinet with my freshmen band class. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could the reed be warped/bowed? Was it stored in a reed guard? On the mouthpiece?

It was a brand new reed that I pulled out of the box.

Sounds like you need to break in both the reed and your clarinet chops. Keeping at it!

I`ve had the same problem this week.. came back to clari after playing tenor sax... think it`s just that clari`s are "strangled" after a free blowing horn..mind , thats on a 5c rico clari mpc after playing #7 runyon on a tenor sax .. Paul :D
