I have tried a Kessler's custom model 1.5 years or so ago, but had to return it because it felt kind of 'light'. Well, being heavy is not necessarily good, but that was at least how I felt. I then went for the Yanagisawa T991. I am not sure if the model I tried was the same one that Dave is currently selling at his site, but was wondering if his Custom Deluxe Red Brass feels heavy. Any ideas? Thank you.

My Kessler Custom Deluxe alto has some heft to it. But it also has the copper bow and bell (http://www.kesslermusic.com/KesslerCustomSax/kcadc85/copper.htm). It's noticeably heavier than an early-1970s Yanagisawa-stencil alto I just picked up.

The local tech who set it up for me thought it compared very favorably to his old Mark 6.

Thank you, mlscnr, for your quick information. I am encouraging others to share their inputs too.

Your post doesn't specify satb, so, fwiw, I have a clear lacquer Custom Deluxe tenor. It weighs 7.5lbs. Plenty hefty imo. Had it for a year now and no material issues.

Cheers!

Sorry about the lack of my clarifiction. Yes, I meant the tenor. Thank you for you inputs too, ratracer.

You may want to do a search on posts by Dave Kessler but I believe 1.5 years ago the Customs were of a non-ribbed construction. That may explain why the one you tried felt "light".

My horn is of ribbed construction which should give it more rigidity and heft thereby giving it a more substantial feel.

Dave Dolson also has some good posts regarding the Kessler horns as well. Check those out as well.

Of course, you can always call the Kessler's and get the definitive word! :)

This is correct. Early 2007, we started transitioning production to Ribbed body construction on all models.

So if you tried a tenor before 2007, then you were playing a non-ribbed horn which would be lighter.

Also, the RedBrass is also a little heavier then the standard brass.
