View Full Version : Good mouthpiece for Conn 6M alto ?
Any good suggestion about a mouthpiece that would work great on a 6m vintage horn with Alexander Superial reeds ?
Mainly Jazz and Blues playing. I like something that projects well but not too edgy.
I am currently playing tenor with Berg larsen HR and Jody Jazz ESP.
If you're in love with the ESP and have the loot, you might want to wait for the new ESP alto MPC. I'm playing on a 10M tenor with the ESP and expect the alto ESP to be exceptional on my 6M, as well.
I'm presently playing a Runyon Custom alto MPC that was tweaked by John Van Wie (sp?). It's a gas and it replaced a Meyer 6M I had had for years (also finished by JVW). If you don't want to shell out the $325.00 for the alto ESP, you might want to check out a JJ Jazz (Runyon Custom finished by Jody).
With my Runyon Custom, I get power and projection and can also get a nice swet sound, when necessary. By the way...don't want to downgrade the Meyer. To me it is the standard MPC to compare others to and mine is fine. I just got a sound more suitable to me with the Runyon.

Gary, You are on the money about them being great on the Conn and other big old horns. The big chamber of this alto piece is perfect. Before I made the ESP, I played the JodyJazz on my 6M and I have many customers who do too. I think that it works great.
Well,
First, let me repeat how fantastic the JodyJazz ESP is on my tenor ! Well done Jody !
I tried a Meyer 7m MPC on my Conn 6m and, despite the fact I am not an alto expert, I found this mouthpiece quite "closed".
In fact I play the equivalent of a 7* on tenor (or ESP .100). Which tip opening would you recommend me on alto ? 7,8, ...

Marc, Thanks again for the nice words about the mpc. I think that a tip opening of .083 on the ESP will probably the best for you. That is equal to a JodyJazz #8 and with the big chamber I don't think that it will feel closed plus it's a very free blowing mpc so even the more closed tips don't feel closed to me especially if I just change to a harder reed.
