Hey everyone I was wondering if this tenor would make a good back up horn, if you do not believe it would could you please tell me a horn that would for around that price I can go up to $1500 maybe more but not much.

You could find a much better horn for a lot less if you look at used horns. Especially on this site. junkdude.com has a few Conn Stencils for less than $900. worldwidesax.com has a few tenors around and under the $1500 mark that would definitely outplay that one.
There's also plenty in the marketplace section of this site.

Yeah I agree with that. You can also check out Kessler's.

Dear Hotspur.

Based on my experience with an Amati 83P, the 63 OA should be a good back-up horn. If you could swing it financially at $1539.00; I would suggest that you too go up to an 83P (or an 83T which is the red brass model and likely special order).

I respect the opinions about the older horns, but I believe there are some real benefits to the technological advancements in quality new saxophones.

Back up for what? I mean like, what's your main horn and how often do you think you'll be needing a "back up"?

If you buy the Amati and decide to sell it two months from now, you're going to be extremely disappointed in the resale value you get for it. On the other hand, a used sax with a better reputation (name) will return you what you paid for it (plus or minus a little depending on how good a deal you got.)

BTW - It doesn't HAVE to be a vintage sax - it could be a YTS-23, a YTS-32/52, etc for a lot less money. Heck, for that price, it could be a 62, a Yanagisawa, and who knows what else!
