Hello, I am newly joined member to this site but have been reading for some time. I was interested to see if any of you here could shed some light on a bari I recently acquired. It is seems to be a SML 16XXX (appro 1958) GM with a low A 95% laq remaining on it. I can't seem to find out a whole lot of info on this horn and what I did find suggested that SML made baris keyed to Bb not A. Is this low A bari a far and few in-between horn? Any help would be great. What is the value of a horn like this or maybe a better question what has a horn like this sold for in the past?
Thanks for your time.

Has anyone seen one of these horns before? I know there are a few Bb SML baris out there but how about a Low A ?

I don't think there are many SML bari's around at all. Fewer that have come for sale. Price? Aim high I say. Likely about what you'd see for a Buffet or Donet plus some for the rarity. Just a guess.

Got any pics? I'm sure we'd love to see them :)

The "SML-pope" Pete Hales thinks there are no Gold Medal Baris with low-A, only King Marigaux. So if you send him pictures of your horn (saxpics (at) saxpics (dot) com) he will probably appreciate it very much. Moreover he can answer all questions you might have. And he's a nice guy too :-)

Pete Hales no longer owns saxpics.com. USA Horn now owns that site.

Pete's new space is http://www.thesax.info/

Thanks for the info both of you. It was has been a horn that I have been trying to get for the past year and just recently got back in touch with the gentleman who own it. It is indeed a Low A and with nothing else stamped on the bell But SML paris france and some engraving on the bell. I will contact Pete with some pics and try to get some up here as well.. thanks again for the replies.

Here are some pics of the horn... The light is a little weird but you get the idea. I will be bringing the horn down for an overhaul this weekend at tenormadness. I'll post some thoughts on the results when I get it back. I am thinking flat metal resos.
