I am a new member and this is my first post so please be gentle!

I just received a new Amati ATS 83P 'Bravour' that I purchased from Interstate Music.

I just turned 58 years old, started playing clarinet when I was 10, and began playing alto sax about three years later. I played in a local Community band until University. I would consider myself as a decent average amateur. I have only played for my amusement for the last 30 years.

After University (Business Major) I kept my instruments ( Bundy France Clarinet) and a Boosey Hawkes Oxford Alto, that I believe is a Keilwert Stencil.

Growing up in the fifties and sixties I always wanted a Tenor but was never able to justify the cost. About nine years ago between wives, I discovered the Internet and purchased a Chinese tenor sax for $300.00US.

The Chinese sax looked beautiful, but after adjustments, modifications and a new mouthpiece it is still not enjoyable to play. I just stopped playing this tenor.

I have Czech ancestry, and when I was on holiday their in 2005 I visited the factory in Kraslice.

From my other hobbies in the past (Skiing, Dirt Bikes, Women!) I discovered Premium equipment can and will make you a better performer once you reach a certain level of competence.

So with the strong Canadian dollar I bought the best Amati Tenor I could. It arrived by mail, packed securely and safely. When I opened the Classic style wood and leatherette case, I was blown away by the beauty and the detail of the sax. It felt substantial and solid in my hands, (constructed of nickel silver alloy) it was beautifully engraved with other artistic details abounding.

I have not played any of the top rated saxes available today, so comparison is difficult, but the instant I began blowing all my positive initial reactions were confirmed. The sound, the action the feel were pure maple syrup; smooth, exotic and delicious. This is an outstanding musical instrument!

I believe these horns are on par with the best available, and yet are priced competitively with the top Taiwanese.

Considering that Keilwerth and Amati were at one time the same company, it is understandable that they both make premium saxes.

I think that these Amati horns are under-priced in North America and provide thousands of sax players like me the opportunity to acquire a top quality horn for less than the Big Four going rate.

I apologize if I sound like a huckster for Amati, but they really are great instruments!

Dennis

Welcome to SOTW Dennis!

Thanks for the review of the Bravour, sounds pretty nice. I've been wanting to see one and hear about it for some time. The website has the alto pictures but no Tenor pics. Any chance you can take a few to share online? I look forward to the chance to play one! Does Interstate offer an easy return policy?

Look forward to hearing more about your horn and again, welcome to SOTW!

cymru,
I believe Interstate has a 45 day return policy, but I think it would be wise to check with them on the specifics.

I will post pictures after the holidays

Congrats on your new horn.

Some of the older Amati's have received less than favorable reviews. I had one for a student (Amati 62) and it played quite well to say the least.

I have always wanted to see and play one of the 83's to see how they stack up to other horns in their price range. It seems to have many very nice features that one would find on some of the more popular saxes.

It sure looks pretty. Compared to the junk tenor you had this should be a dream. What did you pay if you do not mind me asking?

Keep us updated.

Hutmo,

I paid the listed price at Interstate' web site ($1539.00US) US freight included. All I had to pay was Canadian PST, GST, and $5.00 Customs Handling. It was shipped by US Postal Service.

It is a fantastic horn!

I think anybody considering a Yamaha or some of the excellent products coming from Taiwan should seriously consider the Amati line.

At Interstate a Yamaha YTS 23 is $2066.00 and a Jupiter 889SG, is $1829.00.

By the way the sax was play tested at the factory by 'Zach' and it works perfectly.

I will be sending more pictures later in the week

Those of you who have followed the posts regarding the new Dave Guardala tenors sold by WWBW (Woodwind Brasswind, for the uninitiated) are aware that the "experts" here believe that the recent ones have been produced by the Amati factory in Kraslice. This distinguishes them from those produced earlier by the B&S factory in Germany.

Anyway, I bought one, I mean one of these non-B&S Guardala tenors. (There is no stamp telling country of origin, and I understand that B&S always stamped theirs with "Made in Germany".)

I love this horn. With the right mouthpiece, I am able to make the classical sound I want and yet push it for big band and other less traditional use. I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to say whether the tenor in this thread would be the same. Does anyone else have a take on it?

OK So where can a person look at an Amati Alto Bravour? I got the run around from the factory and their rep in New Jersey.
Anyone around Kansas City have one of these to try?

Wow. Nice horn! I see a 73PQ for sale at WWBW, and that one looks cool, but there is only one pic. Is this the one that's 100% nickel-silver?

I used to have an old MKVI that hadd a nickel plated bell with a normal laquer over the rest of the body, and that was wicked looking. I think this one looks even better. The engraving alone would cost a fortune if it were from somewhere else.

Now I am looking for something in this price range.

After playing it awhile I hope you will post again to tell us hoow it responds, feels etc.

BBlow,

The horn is awesome, far better than I am as a musician. I just restarted playing and have joined the Pickering Community Concert Band. I am one of two tenor players, the other fellow, an excellent musician who is about 30 years younger plays a mint Selmer Mark VII. Honestly on the basis of tone, consistency and intonation I think my horn is a little better; and is far better looking 8-)

I have tried several mouthpieces including a Meyer 6m and currently I am playing the stock mouthpiece for concert work.

They do look like lovely horns. Where did you purchase it?
Seems as amati is almost impossible to get any info from in regards to dealers and pricing.
