So who here has an EX. I just got mine and I'm absolutely loving it. I can't put it down. I get a great Classical and Jazz sound out of mine. So please share your experiences with this great horn. Also please post your set up that you use with it.

I love the EX. I tried SA80s and the whole nine yards, and nothing compared to the Yamaha...my classical tone is very dark, and when I want to play jazz, I can really cut through. IMO, nothing can beat the EX.

I use a C* (might be getting an AL3 soon) with Vandoren Blue Box
BG Super Revelation Ligature (hopefully getting a Bay or Vandoren Optimum)

For jazz, a Vandoren V5 A45 facing, and Rico Jazz Select, with the BG ligature (it's really free blowing, and IMO great for jazz)

I think Woody stole that from Groucho Marx.

I've been playing EX's for about two years, about to be two and a half I believe. Great horns. I love my EXGP alto too.

I own a EX Alto. Had it for a few months I think more people play them at my college then Selmers. Dang fine horn.

I too am an enthusiastic convert to Yamaha 875EXs. I'm mostly a classical player. I had played a Selmer Mark VI alto since college days in the late 1970s. Based on the recommendation of a friend, I bought an 82z alto and it was OK but not something I fell in love with. I was talking with Indiana University's Otis Murphy at a conference in San Antonio over a year ago and he was telling me about why he likes the 875EX. So, I went to the exhibit hall and tried out a few altos and couldn't believe it. I went home that night and got my Ebay ad ready to sell the 82z alto and ordered an 875EX alto from prowinds. Love it.

After a couple of months, I bought a soprano 875EX and had the same experience. Sold my Selmer S-80.

I actually was happy with my 82Z tenor but wound up liking the 875EX tenor better too after getting some time with one. Same story, sold the 82z and bought an 875EX.

I use C* on soprano and Vandoren AL3 and TL3 on alto and tenor. Vandoren bluebox 3.5's on soprano and 3's on alto/tenor.

YAS-875EX, gold lacquer, had it five years from new (maybe one of the earliest EX altos that arrived in the UK along with an 82Z), took to it straight away and still love playing it.

Very dependable and excellent all-round instrument.

I play on an YAS-875EX in regular lacquer; it is the best classical and more brilliant jazz saxophone made. It has the distinctively Yamaha sound, a purity and brillance of sound that is unmatched, and perfect intonation. It's not my favorite for traditional jazz, but it is a horn that is unmatched.

I've had my YAS-875EX for more than three years and abolutely love it. I feel that I can play any style at all. I do jazz gigs with an Otto Link HR or sometimes Meyer HR. I play contemporary Christian with the Meyer or a Runyon. It can play dark or bright. The action is as fast as any horn I've ever played. As you see from my note below, I also own a YAS-61 (for 36 years). The 61 is great, but I prefer the EX because it is plays so easily and fast.

Hey all. Well I'm in my 8th month and I'm determined to play til I drop. Here's the story.
Got a leased YAS 23 alto, stayed with this for 5 months and knew I would play the rest of my life. I'm a late bloomer. So I researched until I dropped and decided to buy an YAS 82z, but before I did I rented a student Selmer Tenor and the change blew my mind. Tenor was for me but now I needed more research. I tried the YTS 82z and the YTS 875EX laqued. Hands down, for a beginner, and I know things will change, but the EX is me. I can't wait for the new day so I can put my hour in practicing.
Setup is what came with the horn, G3 handmade neck and a 4 c MP. That's it for now.

The YAS-875EX is truly the world's greatest saxophone. It is the saxophone by which all others should be judged. Its ergonomics are second to none. Its intonation is second to none. Its dynamic range is second to none. It productions consistency is second to none. Its sound is deep, brilliant and complex. You can play classical, rock, pop, smooth jazz, (real?) jazz on this horn. It's simply unbeatable across the board. I love my 875EX alto and soprano as well. They simply don't get any better than this.

Ok, so it's been 3 months with this beauty and I have a question. The mpc that comes with the horn is a 4C, I think, says custom whatever that is, and has a square chamber. I've read, somewhere these posts, that the best is the round chamber. The mpc works fine for now but what have you found that works better than this.
thanks, frank

Frank, thats a Yamaha 4C Custom mpc that comes with a new 875. I gave mine away. I use a Meyer 5m, even bought a spare as I like it so much.

I'd been looking into purchasing an alto sax after having been absent from the alto world for almost a decade (I picked up the tenor and haven't looked back until now). My professor wants me to broaden my repertoire into the classical realm and said that I should look into purchasing an alto. As a college student I knew that I needed both a top-notch horn, and one that I could afford. So I was already leaning towards the EX over comparable horns from Selmer and Yanigasawa. I went into New York City today and went to Roberto Winds (by far the best sax shop in the city) and finally got around to playing one after drooling over it online, and I have to say that it was everything I imagined and more. I knew it was good, but I didn't know it was that good. For someone who hadn't played the alto in years, using a borrowed mouthpiece, and a new #4 reed the horn played amazing. I'll definitely be getting one as soon as my finances are in order.

Question, dealer gave me all the cleaning stuff when I purchased mine 6 months ago and I'm wondering when should I start oiling the actions? To my ear it plays great. The only thing I have learned is that I need to hold open the G# until it drys otherwise it sticks, too much water.

I've been a member for almost two months now, and I'm never looking back!
I love this horn to death, and it's a clear step above everything else I've ever tried!

I'm looking forward to getting either a G2gp or G3gp neck in the next few weeks and making it an even better saxophone!! :D
