Hey guys and gals, recently started a woodwind repair business and I delve into the brass stuff every now and then, have done valve case lining changes ect, but I found for the first time a problem which I havent struck before. Am after anyone else that knows the answer for this to pitch in.
A customers cornet had sticky valves, so I did the usual and stripped and cleaned as per normal and lighlty lubed the pistons up prior to re-assembly with a very fine grade oil, never had problems with this stuff before, reassembled the unit and the pistons really were tight and horrible, you had to work the piston up and down within the bore from both sides to get it to even start to free move under spring tension.
So stripped it again and buffed the pistons and did it again and same problem. Did it a final time and this time I used cream instead of the oil and it works a treat. Smooth and free. Any ideas as to why this happens, as I said before Ive never had this problem yet. Ideas
