Tried to search it but have come up dry. Looks old and very played in, says "Crescent" on the bell with nice but minimal art-deco work. This horn was sold to me unplayable as "made by Buescher" but I got burned. On the neck insert is a serial # 69651 and "made in Czechoslovakia" etched into the metal. Was hoping perhaps a replacement neck but no, the ser.# matches on the body. It certainly looks like SOMEbody blew this horn alot tho...

Yllb,

I'll guess that it comes from the Amati factory,Czechoslovakia: they are still making saxophones !

Hi Paul, as a matter of fact, Amati just got back to me today. You were right on target. This is the text:

"Yes, we have made this type of saxophone. We have found the exact day, it was 7. June. 1968."

Thanks for your imput. I'm now curious if this was a student model or intermediate. It still needs work to be playable and I'm not sure how much I should invest in it. I may e-mail them back w/ more questions, but I don't want to hassle them too much. Have you had any experience w/ Amati saxes?

The Czech village where it was made looks very beautiful and alot like the mountain area I live in here in Virginia. (I accessed their web site) I would like to visit Europe very much, but I don't think Americans are very popular in Europe right now.

GO FOR IT!

I have spent a good deal of time traveling back and forth from Connecticut to Prague (I was dating a gal from there, thinking about marrying her, yadda, yadda). Man this is my favorite European city, and not just for the women (although there is definately a lot to like about them!). Outside of Prage you will need a dictionary and if possible someone who speaks some Czech, inside Prague you will never have to open your phrasebook. The speak english better than we do. You can try to learn some Czech but they won't let you speak it.

GREAT PLACE!!

I too have spent a lot of time travelling in the old USSR satellite nations and through Russi itself. Prague is a lovely city and aside from St. Petersburg and Minsk it is the most interesting city I have ever been in. If you get the chance to go definitely take it. I go to that area of the world at least once or twice a year when I have time. Great place!

P.S. Yes, the women are as beautiful as they are rumored to be.

Mmmmmm..... Minkies from Minsk.....

I should add that Prague has a great Jazz scene. Not necessarily huge, but good quality. It's sort of like the new left bank, very hip.

Hey, you can say that again! :D But seriously, man you guys have got me hot to go. I have a Tenor toten' friend who, after playing a few low key gigs he lucked into in Paris, never came back, he's somewhere in Berlin now I think, couch surfin' and busking, for 2 years now...

Oh, if I only had the balls to quit the job... sessions in Prauge, a beautiful Czech girlfriend... sigh

Yillb,

1) I used/played once a Amati super Classic tenor. IMO it is a good student-model although Amati 'claims" it to be more than that. The applic. is OK and the body is heavy build. Sound is a bit thin although with my metal Lawton 8 (large chamber) the sound became much better. A dukoff S (small chamber)didn't work at all.

2) Although Dutch people are always very critical to the USA I don't see/hear/taste any negative feelings against individual American people who are visiting here and I can't imagine that here in other countries in Europe.

Make a plan and take a plane!!!
