I was just wondering what kind of tone I should go for on bassoon. My teacher always emphasises a full and reedy tone, but to my ears this does not sound as good as the smooth and refined tone I usually hear. Also, what are the differences between the schools of bassoon playing? Thanks.

It depends a lot on which country you are in, although lately the difference is decreasing. European countries tend to favour a full, dark lyrical tone (except france, obviously), while America leans towards the lean, reedy tone your teacher appears to use. Assuming you are in America, this will probably be the tone you are expected to make, however, like you, I prefer a more european concept, and, as a bassoonist, I suggest you develop a full, resonant tone first as it helps to develop projection, pitch stability and fullness of tone. It's quite easy to add edge and buzz to it from there.
Hope that helps...
