Hi There
I was wondering has anyone got or tried the unlaquered vintage Alto? I'm looking at getting a new Alto and quite fancied that sort of direction but just wanted some feedback before i try as the nearest dealer is a good days driving away.

I tried the full range of Tenor Finishes... All were different, the unlaquered was 2nd to the Pink Copper in sound IMHO..... I suggest if you go then try a number of different ones (preferably in the same and different finishes) as I was not convinced the differences were due to the finish and not manufacturing tolerances etc. Great horns... But I ended up with a Ref 36...

I tried three Borg altos, incl an unlaq, at Allegro, in Oxford.

I had only been playing for 9 months and couldn't get a decent sound out of any of them, with my Lamberson 6M!
I could, however, at the same shop, play a Yani 901 and a Selmer Ref 54 with no difficulty whatsoever (within my personal playing-ability limitations, of course!) :)

'Pro' quality saxes shouldn't be 'hard to blow'(with your own mpc), should they ???

Hi There Alistair
Thanks for the reply, curious really as i play a Ref54 Tenor. What did you think of the sound in comparison to the Ref 36? I like the quote by 'Stan the man' Getz by the way as he was my first sax hero, i have so many now i wouldn't have enough space for all the quotes!!

Hi Roger
Thanks for the reply and Oxford would be the place i would have to try out the Borganis mainly because i don't know anywhere else!!
The Reference range are great saxes but i would like something a little different but with a vintage sound and i also feel it is the sax /mouthpiece compatibility that makes the true difference.I'll have to look at other threads to see what mothpieces suit the Borganis.
I'm probably gonna make myself look a true blonde now as i've never heard of a Lamberson mouthpiece......sorry!!!!

Very true about sax, mouthpiece and player compatability..

Haven't tried the unlacquered Borganis, yet; I'm afraid I can't advise, there.

I did like the pearl silver alto I had, and wish I still had it, as well as the same model in soprano.

Ah, well ..
I do play a Borgani pearl silver tenor with ....a Lamberson mpc.;)

G'luck with the search.

At the risk of seeming (almost) redundant...

Hey Tryp', I finally committed to playing the Jubilee exclusively - sold the Ref 36!

I have an unlacquered Borgani Jubilee tenor. It is definitely one of my keepers. However I would not be willing to say that unlacquered is better, or worse, than lacquered.

Overall I slightly prefered the 36 vs the Borgani but I would be tempted to go back and try again now as It has been over a year.

By the way, I saw Art Themen playing a Borgani Brushed Silver with Gold Keys Jubilee Tenor last night and he was brilliant!!!

A great Borgani tenor is very easy to commit to. :borg:
