Hey Brian- where in SoCal are you? I have been around in the OC area, and have seen some good jazz at Le Cave in Costa Mesa and (damn if I can remember the name) some place in Downtown Disney that actually has a Sax on the sign outside.

If you are in the San Diego area, I know of a group that practices every Monday night. They are the "Jazz Project" and their practice is open to the public. Best entertainment value in town.

I've been following the threads posted by the Maryland Faction of SOTW. (onysax, cycleboy, Jough, SteveS, Mojobari and the others) Their get together's sound like a lot of fun! Not to mention being able to see/hear/play a variety of some of the finest instruments ever built, both vintage and modern, and to get together informally with other SOTWers.

I'm new to San Diego and my best discovery so far has been the music of "Big Time Operator". Perhaps we could begin with rlowenote's suggestion. Where does "Jazz Project" hold their Monday night rehearsals Ralph? Anyone else from the area interested?

You may respond here or email me privately.

The Jazz Project practices every Monday at the Red Fox Room (behind the restaurant) at 2223 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego (cross street is Mississippi). It is at the east end of the block of the Inn Suites and between Park Blvd. and Texas . They practice from 7:30-9:30pm.

This is a group that has been together for several years and the public is welcome to listen to their rehearsals. They usually consist of 4 trumpets, 5 saxes, 4 trombones, drummer, bass, piano, & sometimes guitar. I don't think "sitting in" is an option, but you might talk to "Mike" and if qualified, you may get on an alternate list. The only real "subs" I've seen so far are "drums, piano, guitar".

There is even a dance floor for those that want to dance.
