Hi all,
I'm looking for CDs that feature nice soprano sax songs so that I can practice tunes, learn licks, and play along to improve myself... I'm more into smooth jazz, sometimes rock 'n roll, and slow songs that's not really "hardcore" jazz, since I play in a Vietnamese band and 95% of time we play pop songs. Artists like Micheal Lington, Dave Koz, etc... Any recommendation?
Thank you very much,
Kenny.

I know my recommendation is not exactly what you asked for, but ANY aspiring soprano saxophone player should become familiar with Sidney Bechet. DAVE

Jan Garbarek (with Hilliard Ensemble and anything else), Anders Paulsson (Spirituals album), Branford Marsalis (listen to his work with Sting amongst other things), Courtney Pine, Archie Schepp (especially his album with Dollar Brand). All of these guys play some fantastic soprano licks that would be well worth studying. Actually, they all play across a number of genres too, which would fit the bill for you.

Check out Zoot Sims "Soprano Sax." He was primarily a tenor player, but he really knew how to swing on the fish horn. Nice tone, too (IMHO).
Peace.
Smooth Jazz ? Hard to categorize.
Kim Waters, Najee, Marion Meadows.....
Some of it is sickly sweet but it is a case of suck it and see.....

Thank you all for the recommendations, I'll look for those artists next time when I get into the store... Btw, any good online CD stores that have a good collection of those artists listed above?
Thanks again.

This guys work's out on the gym a lot and has a good hair dresser. Also he does not like to wear shirts and maybe he just wants his photo shoots in his bedroom   :D
Marion Meadows......... I've been listening to this guy since his first release. I do enjoy much of his work, but DEFINATLEY NOT his new website.
I also had a stomach like that, before my beer and pizza addiction

Lovely website. :?
It's hard to picture him devoting hours and hours to practicing, hidden away in a windowless practice room somewhere. Especially since he's so busy dancing with destiny, expressing his innermost being, and trying to remember where he left his shirt.

Also check out T-square, a Japanese fusion band. Very slick soprano sound, modern yet warm.

Just let me mention some real great musicians.
Steve Lacy, which is in a category by itself.
Wayne Shorter. Jane Ira Bloom. Dave Liebman. Roland Kirk.
And Trane, of course, who almost singlehandedly brought the soprano back to us.
Check out his Hyms In The Garden CD. Several great cuts with sop. And he has a really beefy tone on the soprano, too. Normally, I don't like the nasally sound of soprano (sorry to all y'all), but this CD has made me think I might like to learn it someday.

I believe the Mouthpiece is a Yanagisawa metal. As for horns, Marion Meadows again uses Yanagisawa. (According to his latest album release)
