I had one of these back in the 70's, but I believe it was a little different from the one I just bought. I think the old one had a round tube holding the bell hook, and this one has a square tube. Anyway, if you pull that tube up all the way till it stops and tighten the thumb screw, it is too vertical, and my tenor acts like it wants to fall over backwards. I've got one of those older LaVoz double stands that holds it really securely -- leaned over quite a ways. Are you supposed to be able to pull the tube up part of the way -- leaving the horn at an angle -- and the thumb screw hold the weight of the horn? I'm concerned the horn might cause the stand to slowly close up and fall over if I do that.

The new Hamilton is a pretty retched stand - but do you have the lower padded support in the correct location? For tenor it should be in the lower of the two holes on the square main support arm and it should hit your horn just above the bow.

Yep, I moved it down there as soon as I saw there were 2 holes. That part works okay, and I have slightly bent the bell bow to hold my horn's bell, so that's okay, too. Its just that the angle is too vertical, and if the stand can be left less than fully extended, I can see that working, too. I'm thinking maybe a second thumb screw (another drilled and tapped hole) might make it secure enough to hold the horn....

Or maybe just drill into the front leg where the thumbscrew will hit when the stand is adjusted to your taste. That thumbscrew seems more decorative than functional.

Hey, that might work, too, but I'd have to be pretty careful. The screw is a 1/4-20, and the leg is only 1/2" wide. A second, smaller screw ( maybe 8-32) might work -- I could also thread one through the leg as a stop. I could even use just a pop rivet as a stop. I don't know -- this thing's going to get some kind of small mod. Does anyone really trust using the pegs with these or other fold up stands? I mean, if your saxophone falls, do you want to have a flute or clarinet anywhere near it?
