I have started a new website, Mouthpieceworks.com. On the website I'm offering two new products, Throat Inserts and Removable, Adjustable Wedges. I've been a participating member of SOTW for well over two years and think these products will be of great interest to many of the members.

The Throat Inserts came about because a couple of friends wanted to get a little more power and focus out of their Meyers on alto without changing their basic sound. I thought, "If they only had a throat design more like other mouthpieces, they would have what they wanted." Thus, the idea for the Throat Inserts was born. We were all very pleasantly surprised by how well they worked. After that, I realized that these could also be the answer for all of the teachers and students I've known through the years that liked the playability of Selmer S80 mouthpieces but found them a little thin and bright.

The Removable, Adjustable Wedges are Plexiglas wedges using hard rubber for a pressure fit so they can be positioned pretty much anywhere in the chamber to have more or less effect on the sound. I've known many players through the years that have made their own, but we have worked hard to perfect the design. These are handmade to exacting specifications. They come in a variety of lengths, shapes, sizes, textures, and designs for maximum customization and versatility. They are easily and quickly adjustable or removable. There are also reversible wedges for two different sounds from one wedge and even a rollover baffle wedge design that allows for a small boost in power with little effect on playability. Since chamber dimensions vary so much between brands, each wedge is brand and model specific, although some wedges will work in more than one brand of mouthpiece.

Further information about these products, along with a lot of general mouthpiece and sound information, can be found on the website. Along with these products, I am once again accepting custom mouthpiece refacing work. I think you'll find the rates very reasonable. We also have some vintage mouthpieces for sale. Many of them haven't been posted yet, but will be soon.

Feel free to email me at JSMALLWOOD@mouthpieceworks.com if I can be of service in any way, even if it's just answering a general question. I'll also be glad to respond to any posts here. I will, of course, be confining posts about our products and services to the New Products and Sax Websites sections. Thanks for looking.

I met Joe at Texas Music Educators Association, he was at a booth two down from ours. I had a great time talking to Joe, who has some great ideas and products. By all means, check out his site.

I want SOTW readers to know, I get a real kick out of actually meeting some of the wonderful people I have met here on SOTW, to put a face with a name. And Joe really reinforced this for me!

Nice meeting you, guy!

Thanks, Paul. It was nice meeting you and getting to talk shop a bit. I had a chance to try out the Antigua sopranos at Paul's booth and, I have to say, you can believe the hype. I thought the straight blew just like the Yanagisawas I've played, including having excellent tuning. I loved your curved soprano but, then, I play on a curved sop (1920's silver Conn). For the price, these saxes would be hard to beat.
