Zoot, ~gracias~ thanx bro'.
Plus Kim- now I know why we get along so well.
Happy b' day to you to!! You are very cool.
Thanks guys and ladies...I feel great and am in a great period of my life
as a musician. THANKS! Thanks to Harri for the great vibes.
Its funny, when I was turning 18 (decades ago in Boston)
my piano teacher Margret Chaloff, whos was Serge Chaloffs mom,
did a astrology chart on me.
To show me why in life I am in my chosen path. It was very cool. I found out..my birthday is the same day as Lou Donaldson the great sax player. Then-AS A SCORPIO- I am along side;
SergeChaloff, Don Byas, Phil Woods, Booker Ervin and my hero Charlie Mariano. Wild yes? Imagine how that spun my head ay age 18! All Scorpios.
Then years later ,I found
out one of my teachers who really was THERE
for me at Berklee...Andy McGhee...was also a Scorpio. Nov 2ed.
At 18 I was studying with Charlie Mariano at Berklee. For my 18th birthday
he got me into an Indian instrument that he used called the Nagaswaram.
I still play it and have Marianos spare Nagaswaram.what an honor.
I started to study ragas & Indian scales with Charlie in addition to sax jazz. This was in 1970!! That was also when Boston & the fusion of many musics were reaching a ~boiling point~ a far as coming together as a fusion of one. During the day I was playing ragas..with my teacher and biggest influence Charlie Mariano...and at night I was working 5 hour plus gigs in the -COMBAT ZONE- playing tenor sax for strippers in clubs like the " 2:00 Lounge" or the " Mouse Trap".I started to realize that if the music had no groove...or grease...there was something missing.
There was a universal element in both jazz & indian ragas that stayed with me forever. In short- ya gotta git down when you play 8)
Years later...a friendship developed with Phil Woods that continues to this day. Not to mention I always send a card and
birthday gift to Phil & Charlie Mariano. I guess its deeper than I can explain here. A form of respect.
I never studied WITH Phil either. He's done things for me that have made me spin with joy. He's a beautiful dude.
Mariano - to this day- stays in touch, and lives in Germany.Being around him & Margret Chaloff at 17 & 18 changed my life.
SO- I hope that makes some sense. It sure does to me.
Being a scorpio is a good thang...especially if you play saxophone IMHO.
Again~ thanks ya'll.
Thank _you_, Tim, for being a continuing source of inspiration.
The more I learn from you, the more I have to share.
Cheers,
George

George-that was nice of you, thanks.
Its a unique thing this forum-as we are talking something that is more of an ~esoteric~ nature at times as well as something everyone might not get. Its nice that YOU get it :) Music IS to be shared.
Another cool inspirational Scoprpio...that I forgot is Fred Lipsius.
A teacher of mine/ good friend & founding member of " Blood Sweat and Tears". If you wanna really get inspired check out Lipsius CDs called;
Dreaming of Your Love (MJA, 1995)
Better Believe It (MJA, 1996)
You'll love `em. There is a person who stands tall in my eyes as a source of endless creativity. Freddy Lipsius....wow can he play.
Happy Birthday, Tim. I'm glad to see that there are some cats around here that are as old as I am.

You are a wealth of info and lucky for us you bring along a great attitude to boot. I smiled when you mentioned the combat zone. Brings me back to the Summer of 74 when I was at Berklee (playing trpt). One weekend night some buddies and I went to Harvard Square drinking and then off to the Combat Zone. Boston, what a town. I saw Miles, Rassan Roland Kirk, George Benson and lots others at the Jazz Workshop . Good times. Bruce Hornsby was there when I was in summer session. Who knew he could sing??? Anyway, happy birthday. (Mines the 13th) Guess Scorps and Sax go together. K

Hi folks,
Tim wanted me to post this picture and information:
Harri- is there any way you could put this somewhere on SOTW for the folks to see??? It's a great shot of me and tenor sax star Lew Tabackin at last years Berks Jazz Festival. Scott Lee on bass is behind us-and drummer Chuck Zueren is hidden.
You could also add that I'm at the April "Cape May" jazz festival in New Jersey in April. April 19th at " Carneys".
I think the SOTW folks would enjoy this. Lew Tabackin is amazing!
In any case...thanks for the help. Yours in saxness- Tim Price

Thanks Harri :) - my cut & paste skills are slow.
This forum is a viable asset on live performances. More often than not
it is a help to getting folks aware of events. Many times, something is advertised, but this forum does help a lot. With the future being cyber based instead of paper print ( eg-magazines) I feel forums like this are a positive way to reach people and advance the music. When I played in Holland I met a lot of cool people & players who saw the blurbs on this forum. It was very inspirational.Unless yor a huge media name that the powers that be can feed off...then you have to create energy for yourself.
My mind keeps going to this tune Lew Tabackin played flute on a Jerome Kern that day, it was just beautiful. I can still hear it.
More on the 2004 events soon.
