Years ago My biggest regret was selling a Metal Florda Link Bari MPC. Should never of done it!!! Thought I could find better - never did. Too Late now.

What have you regretted selling?

Sometimes I regret selling my SS Berg 105/3. Even if I had it though, I wouldn't be playing it with any regularity. It had qualities I haven't quite been able to find in other mpc's. My Barone T/C comes close enough though.

My guardala Branford Marsalis alto mouthpiece ,and my refaced Florida link tenor mouthpiece

But to be honest there are more things that I regret not buying .

I let go a Leblanc (Paris) System tenor sax, bought in 1968. I was too immature to understand what a fine horn it was; I felt short-changed because a band director (who likely got a kickback on the deal) talked me into it instead of a Mark VI. And yet it was a superb instrument. I wish I still had it.

I've sold so much stuff over the last couple of years. a couple summers ago I sold 18 mouthpieces, including a NY Meyer 7 for alto. I have sold two Rast soloists that I wish I kept.

Really good theory. Don't look back with regret, look forward with great anticipation. I'm not sure who said that, if anyone, but it sounds good to me.

Not sax-related, but I sold an old Hofner Club 40 electric guitar for £30 to buy a wedding ring. Worth hundreds now. It's a shame, but wouldn't my wife look silly with a guitar hanging from her finger?

I haven't actually managed to sell any saxes yet - just buy them - so my contribution will have to be the 1962 Fender Jazzmaster.

My regrets...

A 1920's silver plated Martin Bass Sax sold for - $250
A 1960's low A 'DABICO' Baritone Sax sold for - $ 100
A 1950's Martin 'The Martin' Tenor Sax sold for - $ 250
A 1960's Buffet / Evette Clarinet sold for - $ 125

Also, I was once persuaded to 'trade' to a mouthpiece dealer, 2 vintage Otto Link Tenor Sax mouthpieces (one was a 'Master Link' - the other a very old 'Tonemaster') to get two 'modern' mouthpieces (a metal Berg and a Brilhart) that I did not like once I got them.

I have plenty of regrets
I have sold and traded 3 ny usa meyer altos .(not that I liked them that much but the value skyrocketed on them after I sold them)sold a blue jumbo java a45 that was a real player and never could find another that played just like it . I still look for them ...
bd dukoff 1945 brass tenor 5* that played like butter.shouldnt have let that one get away .it was mint .also had a the martin alto that was mint. my mom sold it when i was at college mistakenly thought that was the horn i was trying to sell. the horn she was supposed to sell was a student reynolds tenor . she felt bad and I never made a fuss about that .sale price was 160.00 .also I screwed up when I sold a king super 20 tenor 411*** that played like a cannon .that time I needed the money so I kind of had to sell but I wish I had that one back . Im happy with the gear I have and truthfully sound about the same with any horn or mouthpiece but I still wish I had these items back .

I haven't sold much equipment. But I regret selling my troubadour I could of spent a lot more time on it then I did, and it had the power but I wanted instant gratification. Shame.
1932 Martin Handcraft Troubadour can't remember the serial number. But I sold it and got a clarinet and it helped me get my Yani. Its tough, but I would like to buy one after college.
And you guys told me I would regret it, I hate it when your right.

An Olds Super trumpet, which I sold in 1961 to pay maternity bills. I guess that regret is misplaced. We had a son.
My first sax, a $200 Vito tenor, which I sold to the fellow who arranged for me to buy it to learn to play the sax. I don't regret not having it, but I regret that it is now unplayed, hanging on the wall in his music room.

A berg larsen mouthpiece. 110 - 3 - SMS (stainless), from the late '70's or early '80s. A rare piece, I'd guess. It wasn't quite right for the funk/rock music I was playing when I sold it, but I remember the tone I used to be able to get playing it. Haven't been able to duplicate it.

He kept the other relacquered Mark VI, because it looked nice from off the stage, and the Five digit a lot of dings, had no problem gettin out a low Bb, and the laquer made it look like Brecker's.

Virtually everything! The lone exception is the close to mint Rudy Wiedoeft alto. Looked intriguing- lots of odd keys, extra tone holes, and alternate fingerings. Aside from being a pain to keep in regulation it, regardless of mouthpiece, reed or state of regulation, sounded remarkably akin to a goat having its foot stamped on.

A good few years ago I bought a SBA alto from Dick Parry who did the Pink Floyd things. Anyway after a couple of years when he was going back on the road with PF, he asked me if I would let him have the alto back. We met up at some motorway services and did the deal.
This alto was buffed to **** and the engraving was totalled, BUT this was the best blowing alto i have ever had.
Dick, where are you, I want it back.
SBA alto wanted.

I traded in a 1929 Martin Handcraft tenor sax for a price reduction toward a Buffet SDA alto sax. I love the Buffet but I wish I had paid the cash. Although the Martin was not my main tenor, I miss the super dark vintage tone it had.

I regret selling my Lawton 7 plain number tenor mouthpiece. I was young and inexperienced and now I'd like it back but it's too late. Buescher BU-3 Soprano. A super-cheap horn, with terrible build quality. I sold it to a friend who wanted to try soprano, because I thought it was a crap horn and didn't want to mess with it. I'm routinely haunted by an older Yani bari I sold several years ago - just glorious. Sold it to put the money into another horn. Didn't realize how special that bari was until it was gone and I tried to recapture it in another horn. I've gone through a number of other baris from that time period to no avail. I'm seriously considering giving up the bari entirely out of my frustration. Reached the point where I don't enjoy playing bari much at all anymore. I can barely talk myself into picking it up. I sold my Selmer Mark VII alto.

Yeah, I know it wasn't a VI, but I still regret it. It had the original traypack case in 99% condition (had a case cover on it until the day I got it) with both the clarinet and flute inserts in 100% condition (never had been used). It had an original C* mouthpiece and EVEN THOUGH I HAD IT OVERHAULED AND RELAQUERED, IT STILL SOUNDED AND PLAYED WONDERFULLY! (so much for all the hype, huh?)

The Hemke designed keys were said not to be liked by most players, but I was part of that probable 5% that it did work for, it fit my swollen mitts just fine. The horn was twice as heavy as my '59 Martelle (Stenciled) Keilwerth, it was built like a tank.

A moment of silence for the Mark VII please...

Every now and then I regret having sold my original lacquer 52K SBA Low A Bari in 2001. At the time, I wasn't playing much bari, and was trying to get together a down payment for my house. Someone was bugging me on a monthly basis to sell to them, so I set a high price, they bit, and the deal was done. Then I got calls for 6 bari gigs in the 3 weeks following the sale, and had to borrow a horn!

Most of my foolish impulse sales took place when I discovered girls and they discovered me. That coupled with college, cars and partying. Yes the hoarding started young.

College is but a distant memory, and I enjoy a lot less of all the rest as I get old, fat, and cantankerous. Not a day goes by that I don't kick myself for selling many horns, Militaria, and other assorted goodies in my impetuous youth.

Ah well, live and learn.

I once had a random urge to look in the local newspaper for cheap vintage saxes hoping to find something valuable, and I did! I find an art collector with 2 Bueschers, a 400-style tenor and 50's Aristocrat alto, and I could have bought both for $150! I only bought the alto for $75, because I made a mistake and thought the tenor was a Bundy (doh!) Then I made the mistake of selling the alto for just a few hundred since I never got it fixed up. Now I crave that exact horn and wish I still had it!

I also regret selling my older Morgan Excalibur 6M that I bought on the same day as Ralph's passing. It was the best Morgan I ever played. I sold it just because it didn't work with the horn I was currently using and didn't think I'd need it again. The guy on e-bay who bought it said that it was the best Morgan Excalibur he tried too.

When I was first learning double reeds, I got a steal of a deal on a fine Cabart English horn. My teacher said it was better than hers. I had it but I hardly played it. By and by I needed money for college, so I reluctantly sold it.

Now I have another English horn, which may be a step or two down from the Cabart. I don't know because since I was a novice with the Cabart, I couldn't really appreciate its quality. Looking back, it was still the right decision to make, but I still wonder what I really had.

I regretted my "Mom" selling my 1st Alto Sax because I can't respond to the thread "What was your 1st sax" since I don't remember! But it did allow me to achieve 1st chair in High School when the regular band director was away and the spot was being chaired by someone else who held quick tryouts in the sax section when he didn't like the sound of it, and so I was quickly elevated to where I belonged ;) in front of the cheerleader who had asked me not to have tryouts against her since they were held after school and she had her cheerleading to worry about;:D and all the others. (Yup, I was sitting in last chair, probably because the band director didn't like the sound of my sax.) Of course, the band director did finally get Mum to buy me the Yamaha YAS that I still have to this day and play almost daily.:D

I just bought a 1951 Buescher Aristocrat and it is my new favorite horn. I love it more than my Mark VII! It is a dream to play!!

Regrets? I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention. I did what I had to do, and saw it through without exemption.

Yes, there were times (I'm sure you knew) when I bit off more than I could chew. But through it all, when there was doubt, I ate it up and spit it out. I faced it all and I stood tall; and did it my way.

For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught. To say the things he truly feels; and not the words of one who kneels. The record shows I took the blows. I did it my way!

What a thread, a great place to vent....!

Early 80's, newly married, kids on the way. I (gave away) sold my SML Tenor (Waldorf, MD). Do I EVER regret it....yes, i'd wish i had it back.

Reading these posts, what we sold on Monday, we can't afford to buy back on Friday. I can see it now, excuse # 333, "Honey, it's just an investment. I'm looking out for our future......."

Even my old metal clarinets, my antique king (that will never play decent), C-Mel's, now i don't want to let go of ANYTHING.

my obit...."he left behind a bunch of old saxes and three gold fillings."

Every instrument I owned...

Disability...unable to work...took two years for my S.S. Disability to go through...didn't really have a choice but to sell everything in the mean time.

Customized Mark VI Alto - truly a one of a kind horn.
Mark VI Tenor - 20 years old but in absolutely brand new condition - not a scratch or blemish of any kind.
Gold Plated Selmer model 22 Alto - in beautiful condition
Conn C-Melody
Flute
Clarinet

I regret the circumstances that left me no other options...but there's nothing I could have done to change them. Sometimes life hands you a huge $h*t sandwich and you just have to eat it.

Ha, you know I just had that conversation with my wife today; "you know, honey, our best investments in the last ten years have been all my horns and vintage cars!" Of course, when I suggested more, I got a look that sent a chill down my spine....

I regret selling my Morgan 8M tenor mpc, Quad ESL-63 loudspeakers, Tandberg reel-to-reel tape deck, and Benge Claude Gordon trumpet (hand picked for me by Zig Kanstul and Claude at the factory).

I also regret the loss of my Maine Coon cat Calvin, but that's a story too emotional to recount here.

I am always on the prowl for "hints", leaving the print out of the bargain ebay horn "innocently" on the table (where she's sure to see it), the bonus from work, yes, the dishwasher needs to be replaced, but that refaced mouthpiece won't be for sale long.....do the kids REALLY need the rest of their tuition money.........

i'm open to hearing other's creative ideas.......

Idk, most of the stuff, if I wanted it back I could probably get it back. It may take me awhile to do so. But I think it could be done. Not easily mind you, but I could probably find it again.
IT would be interesting to see a list of the stuff you'll never regret selling.
And I regret selling my 1925 Conn C-Mel to a SOTW member, he probably has better use for it then I would or do. But still it was in damn good condition when I sold it, just needed an overhaul and a little solder work.
Ohh well getting one is on my short list.
