Does anyone have a story about overcoming adversity and playing a less-than-great piece into submission? At some point I've gotta cut back on the mp purchases!! I'm sure others feel the same way. Bonus points for how you did it. Cheers!

I think a majority of sax players are trying to do this. They just use the stock MP or the best one they could try at the local music store. The only reason they buy a new MP is if they damage the one they are using. Of course we, the enlightened, know what they are missing out on...

we, the enlightened
I.e. - Those with more money than practice time or patience.
Although it seems I'm too short of both... Seems the new ones only play well until the trial period is up or until that one perfect mate reed, which you somehow pick up by sheer, dumb luck, dies...

Got that quote feature backwards - the short statement id from MojoBari - I'm the long-winded one ( must be from playing  flute ).

LOL...
The only thing I've ever seen in there is some dried spittle. :D
Seriously, though, that's a GAS habit I really can't afford...

I just buy em' try em' and ditch the ones I dont like. I freqently have as many as 8 or 9 nice pieces around and then swap or sell them off till I have around 3 or 4. Depends on your wallet. I dont have the money to keep buying unless I do this. This method has gotten me several pieces I really enjoy and that are not redundant. Buying used I dont think that there is really a reason (unless your really busted) to suffer through junk. On the other hand Im still not much of a player and still wont be for some time, even if someone generous (and all offers will be accepted) sends me a 400 dollar mpc... so a great mpc or horn doesnt make for a good player.
