View Full Version : Varsity Tenor Sax

I have a silver tenor sax with rolled tone hoes and undercrook support similar to a conn. It has made in Czechoslavakia on the rear, and Varsity engraved on the bell, but have no idea who made it. Any ideas i would be grateful.

I decided to contact the two main suppliers of saxophones in Czech, which were Amatti, and Keilwerth. Keilwerth replied with the following iformation.
The serial No. 5517 on this sax was produced in 1935. Amatti replied that it was not their horn. Anybody out there with a similar horn, hope mthis is helpful to you.

Hi there... I have just bought a Varsity alto saxophone and you have answered a question that I was asking as to who made it serial number is roughly the sames and this matches what was said by the seller that the man who played it performed during the second world war. If you could send me the thread to get in touch with Keilwerth maybe I can get some more info ???
Like your tenor it has rolled tone holes and very nice mother of pearl keys and what I think is a very light action on the keys....

I have a alto too,rolled tone holes,La Fleur Varsity,Made in UK....PICS in my album....You have pics???

Bellbrace definitely looks Keilwerth.

Kinda cool, too...there aren''t a whole lotta example of CZ-made Keilwerths around anymore. Most of the old ones you see are Germany-made, post-WWII. That could be a nice old horn one you get 'er assembled.

Looks much better with the keys back on ;) That horn has a hella nice tone.....

Ya I love the tone!!...I have lost interest in playing my yts 23...going on eBay,a friend has offered me the use of a old mexi-conn Tenor.Maybe one day I will find a La Fleur Varsity Tenor to match this Alto...sax me up Scotty!

Basically...any old JK horn is gonna have that sort of tone & feel.

You can also keep your eye out for Tenors engraved Pierre Maure, Troubador, TAM, Paragon, Bundy Special/H & A Selmer, and the King Tempo.

All of those, in addition to the H. Coufs, are Julius Keilwerth horns. Only the Coufs and the King Tempos seem to be on anyone's radar. The others, most having obscure stencil names, have very low market prices.
