View Full Version : Are all Selmer necks thin?

I recently picked up a Series III neck for my Series II tenor. The tenor will be here on Monday but the III neck arrived this week. One thing I noticed is just how thin the neck and tenon are. Since I'm a Couf/Keilwerth player I'm surprised at how light the Selmer neck is. Even my Gloger thin-wall silver neck is much thicker than the Selmer neck.
Is this typical of all Selmer necks or a characteristic of the Series III necks?

In an effort to address response/resonance issues with the Series II, the Series III tenor neck was made to very nearly match the shape of the Mk VI neck. The neck brace was changed from the traditional sheet brass to just a brass rod soldered along the curve. Various metals and alloys have been made available to provide different tones, and the cork on the mouthpipe has been shortened. I haven't gauged the tenon thickness, but they do look a little thin. All these changes work together with the Series III tenor to make it more playable by increasing resonance and ease of response. I have found the Series III tenor neck to be more flexible than I'm used to, giving the perception of 'flimsiness'. I bought a standard lacquered brass III neck to try on my Mk VI, but it was not as good as my original neck, so I sold it. It may be a very good thing to try on a SuperAction 80 and SA 80 II.

Not sure if your statement is correct! I play a SeriesIII, have had it about 5 years. The original neck has the traditional folded piece of brass curves ton the neck as the brace. I have a Red copper Selmer neck which has the piece of rod molded to the curve of the neck as a brace. I have been using a Paris Selmer solid silver neckfor about ayear and that has a major piece of metal as a brass as a brace.
Apparently there is a difference between USA Selmer necks and French made for the Silver, could be you have one in brass?
