hey everyone. nice to see some other players besides those in my school band who have no idea what the hell they're doing. I'm a 16 year old bari player. I have a Selmer USA that was provided to me by my school. Is this a good instrument? I can't really compare because its the only one i've ever played. I love the bari. Almost as much as i love playing it i love what its done to my alto tone :)

Hi :) K-rock, in full expectation of refutation by other posters I shall give your horn a 6

Welcome! I have never been a fan of any Selmer but the Paris models, so I'm biased. It's a decent student horn, but if you wanna keep playing bari, start saving. Get a good mouthpiece first and while you're saving your dough, try to play test as many baris as you can. I was luck in that I played a Buffet silver plated as my first bari, moved to a MK VI in junior high school, and played a Couf Superba 1 in high school. I have played most of the baritone models, except for the classic American horns (Never tried a King or Buescher bari). Ilike the old Conns, Selmers, Yamaha, and Couf. I don't personally like Keilwerths, but they are well-made horns. I played old Conn, Buescher, and King on tenor and they are all great.

Sorry to be long-winded, but my point is that I bought all my horns after trying what was available. I always recommend to my students that they buy a horn that isn't fashionable, but good, I bought a Conn 6M alto cheap, played it for years and sold it for much more than I paid. A Bundy (Selmer USA) won't pay those kind of dividends, so buy something that is a good investment and trade up when you can afford it.
