Hi, I am looking for a good saxophone swab. I used to have a Clarinet swab that my friend made from a handkerchief, but that got stuck inside my horn. My private teacher says that I should get a BG swab, and I've looked at those, but they don't seem like they would work. I'm interested in any brands that work, and what is a good swab for my alto. It seems like I'm violating my saxophone's right's by not swabbing it, but I have a replacement one, although it's kind of bad.
Thanks for the info, BrassaxMan5

For years I have used the standard cloth type swab with good results. I have changed to the silk swabs and really like the way they work.

I like my Hodge silk swab (tenor). It's very nice quality, much better than the Gem swab I have for soprano. The silk is heavier, the edge stitching is sturdier, and the coated weight is a better shape on the Hodge than the Gem. The Hodge swabs are available through Saxquest.

I use three black silk swabs to clean my sax. I use two swabs through the sax body. And I have one black silk swab for a clarinet that I pull through the sax neck. This seems to do the trick. I can't offhand remember the brand name of the swabs. I get them from my local Sam Ash store and they always carry therm.

I use a yamaha clarinet swab to clean out my neck after playing. As for the body, as of late I've just been running a LaVoz pad gard through. I need to get a real swab though, I'm not particularly fond of the fuzzy stuff getting all over my key posts and the such.

Has anyone ever used rifle cleaning cloths to swab through your horns?
I am also concerned with those hairy pad savers. A tech once told me that they actually do more harm than good as the lint and fiber tend to get trap inside.
My private teacher says that I should get a BG swab,
That's exactly what I use.

I use gun cleaning patches. They can be used to sticky clean pads as well. Just don't get the cotton patches because they unravel at the edges leaving little threads to get caught under pads.
The largest patches are a little too small for tenor but two can be strung through the cleaning rod.
