hi guys, i've been noticing this thumb pain in my right thumb that just wont go away. I've been contemplating letting it rest for a day or so (and i have done that), but i am really really reluctant to give up on my planned program of regular practice (everyday).
what did u guys do when u first started? did u encounter this pain as well, and how did u cope with it? Thanks for all replies.
If your saxophone is alto, tenor, or bari- the weight of the horn should be mostly on the neck strap with the twoo thumbs counterbalancing and stabalizing the horn.s position. The teeth lightly on thop of the mps should lock things in.
For soprano, I suggest a neck strap if you are having thumb pain. A lot of weight on the right thumb. If that is not possible or not desirable, revisit right hand position with the aid of a mirror or video camera and see if you can discover a right hand position that is more usable for you.
I have two clarinets, both pro quality, and I have that rpoblem for a day or two when I switch horns. I mention this because differnt brand sopranos may have opinions on where the thumb rest should be. Suggest trying other sopranos with thumb/hand position in mind. If you find a balance that is better for you, a good repairman could possible move your thumb hook. Your horn won't look as pretty but may be less painful to play.

Your neck strap might not be properly adjusted such that more weight of the sax is resting on your thumb. Try shortening it.
If the above does not help much, maybe you should consider using a thumb saver rest. I am using it on my clarinet and it feels more comfortable than bare metal.

A cheaper and more accessible approach is to stick some sponge under the thumb rest.

thanks guys for all the help. After some thinking about it, i realized that angle of the thumb rest was wrong for me. After adjustment, i've reduced a lot of the pain now! Maybe some sponge/foam/whatever, and i shall be rid of it entirely now...
