I'm looking for a 1947 tenor (birthday horn). This one is apparently a re-lacquer. Any questions I should ask?

I'd appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks,

Gene

That is a very good looking The Martin horn, they are great.I have one of them and they play fine, intonation is great and really powerful.
That horn is from late 1946 and in very good to excellent condition, its had a relac which does worry some people but if you want shiney then, unless you find a closet horn, this is pretty good.
Mine hasn't had a relacquer but a relac, personally, wouldnt put me off.I just go with the sound. The seller seems genuine enough and must be pretty old to have bought it new and his feedback is passable so if you like it buy it.
The martin horns do come up frequently, but not always as clean,so you can always bid on another. They are extreemly good saxes!!!!!

I've got a The Martin tenor of similar age, and the re-laquer hasn't killed any of its sound. With a Lawton 8*BB it can hold its own against anything.

Does look like a re-laquer from contours of the bell joint seam, engraving hasn't been completely killed tho'. Seller seems nervous, could be a good sign, it's a realistic price (at the moment) if the horn is described fairly.

Regards, Alan.

ask about repairs that may have been covered by the relacquer. I agree, good price at the moment. Wont beat it. That a lot of horn. Martin relaquers if done well can usually weather the proceess...they are so thick.
