Chesssaxmo,

I have an Evette & Schaeffer Soprano # 29XXX which I believe to have been made in the 1920's. I don't think that they had specific model designations back then...E & S was simply the lower quality line of the Buffet Crampon Company.

I'm guessing that yours is a little older as the serial number is a little lower. I haven't ever run across serial number charts for E & S.

Mine has the address (18 & 20 Passage Du Grand Cerf) engraved in fancy script lettering near the E & S and Buffet logos and the serial number.

Mine is lacqered brass, though most of the lacquer is gone by now, does not have pearls on the key touches (never did) and is only keyed to high Eb. The low 'D' key has a hole in the middle of it with a smaller key that covers that hole to make an Eb trill key...kind of a neat oddity.

I hope this helps.

please se:
Saxophone Makes and Models/ Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

on this forum. Saxpics maintains there a link list to serial number sources. From that topic:

http://www.saxophon-service.de/homep/baujahr/buffet01.htm

According to that serial #25970 would date to 1922.

Harri,

'XXX' is in the '100' range so I am guessing 1926.

Thanks again.

Chessaxmo,

I'd say that you will have a hard time finding a replacement key for a horn that old. You never mentioned whether it is a Soprano...Alto...Tenor...Baritone ???

Plus...if it is that old and missing a key...it may need a complete overhaul as well. A replacement key might be able to be made from a similar key from a different horn by cutting, bending or soldering the key.

If you are new to the Sax, and on a budget, (as you say) trying to get started on an 80 year old horn that is not playable as you got it may not be the best way to start out. You might be better off to find a more modern horn in playing condition. Maybe someone on this forum might be a Buffet / Evette collector and might buy or trade for your non-playable oldtimer.

Good luck.

Chesssaxmo,

No. It is simply an 'Evette & Schaeffer'...there is no more specific model number or name than that.

The maker is 'Buffet Crampon & Company'.
