I saw this mpc the first time in Frankfurt at the music fair. Does anyone playtested it. On soprano it is great !!! Selmer makes three different tip openings: D,E and F.

Are you sure it's the super session and not just the new soloists they came out with recently? I'd like to try the super sessions...I tried the new soloists, but they didn't really catch my bag.

Yes, Selmer is comingout with a Super Session Alto mouthpiece, possibly as early as July - they had a prototype at the IAJE convention in January.

There are one or two UK stores that have been listing SS for alto for a while. Haven't got round to trying one myself, yet.

This sounds interesting. If the alto SS is anything as good as the Sop SS, then it'll be worth trying. I play a sop SS size I and I like the sound, control and projection.

Has anyone tried one of these alto pieces yet?

There is another thread on this mouthpiece by Dave Dolson. The WW&BW in Paris have been selling this mp on ebay for a while now. Several people on the SOTW have one, including me. It is a very nice piece, but in my opinion it is not on the same level as the soprano Super Session piece. Doesn't project as well as my metal link or yanagisawa, but definately a smooth piece and easy to play. I have the 'F' facing.

After several months of playing one (a Super Session alto F) I concur with 3saxes' current assessment. The alto Super Session is an easy blower, very warm sound, but after the intial pleasure, it lacks some ability to project (at least for me). It almost feels kinda muddy when compared to the Soloist (of which I have two, both in F). The alto version of the SS is a long way from being the superior player that the soprano Super Session is.

And recently, I picked up a used Morgan-Bilger HR piece (6M) that is a killer - extremely focused with as much volume (or softness) I can put through it. DAVE

If I am using the Selmer C* on my soprano now, what Super Sessions facing would be a good start for me to test? Any advise guys... Mike

M Exner: That is a tough question to answer because so much depends upon your embouchure.

On my older scroll-shank C*, I use a medium-soft Fibracell - and that set up works for me. But I still prefer my Super Sessions in J-facings, the most open of the Super Session line.

Much of your success will depend upon properly matching reed-strength to tip-opening. Your fondness of the C* has little relationship to other mouthpieces and openings.

I don't think any of us can truthfully tell you that because you like the C* that you will like the E or the G or the J on the Super Sessions. THAT is pure speculation. Why don't you order three different sizes from WW&BW (or wherever) and test them yourself? Good luck. DAVE

I guess the comparison process of the three facings would be the best idea, as you suggest. That's a good idea! I also use Fibracell reeds (3.5 on alto and on soprano).

Are you playing the Super Sessions now as your primary mouthpiece to the exclusion of the others? How about the alto?

Now where is that wwbw catalog? Thanks Mike

Mike: For ANYTHING public, I use Super Sessions on soprano. I keep one SS in each case of the three sopranos I use to play-for-pay. I keep back-up pieces in each case, too (a JodyJazz 7, a metal Link 6*, and an S-80 J-facing) but none of those hold a candle to my SS pieces. My scroll-shank C* (with the Fibracell reed) is in one case, also; and I sometimes take it alone when I travel so I have a ready-to-go mouthpiece for testing horns, sitting in, etc., without having to lug around a whole saxophone.

For alto, I recently switched to a used Morgan-Bilger HR piece I found at a local music retailer. As a back up, I keep a new Selmer Soloist in each alto case I use (F-facings). The alto Super Session (again in F-facing) is my third choice, along with an older Meyer 6S Medium Chamber (that's how it is marked). DAVE

I am now going to change my mouthpiece on alto.
I would like to try the new Selmer Super session in D or E size. Can be considered a jazz mouthpiece?

Also, can be compared to a Vandoren Optimum AL4 or is the Vandoren strictly a classical mouthpiece?

I am now playing on a C* and on a Meyer 5MM (not so satisfied with)
