REED and mouthpiece rail matching

Some of the mouthpieces are larger -- wider than the reed . Should I get larger reeds or thin the rails of the mouthepiece to match the reed? I use plasticover reeds mostly. Maybe this is a newbee question?

I don't think it really matters, but any refacer could take care of it for you.
