Have never played a Runyon, decided to give them a try considering the quality problems some other brands seem to be haveing. I relize that the design concepts might be different and these pices will probably not be exactly like others, but there must be some similiarities and tendencies. To aid in my selections I need some help, So:

Would a SR or Custom be closesr to a Link HR. Which is brighter? Do they have rollover baffles?

What would be close to a 2 chamber Berg (or a 1) or a Lawton B?

And what would be close to a Java, and Jumbo Java?

What do you think Lester Young would have played if he played one?
And finaly, I found a jpg file somewhere sowing x-sections of the mouht pieces with short descriptions eg, Medium baffle, large chamebr etc. But it is very hard to read, not clear, nothing I have done helps. Is there a better copy somewhere? Or could someone post the discriptions.

Also, what holds in the spiolers, and is you cut of the spioler and leave the baffle, what happens.

Would a SR or Custom be closesr to a Link HR. Which is brighter? Do they have rollover baffles? The SR is closer to a rubber Link, but it has a smaller chamber than the Link, and is brighter. The Custom has straight sidewalls, and a long sloping baffle, and while it's a good all-around mpc, it's brighter than the SR. btw, I've played a Link for close to 30 years, and went through the same thing you are a couple of years ago. I bought a Custom, and trialed an SR. The SR has a rollover baffle.

What would be close to a 2 chamber Berg (or a 1) or a Lawton B?Probably the new Jaguar.

And what would be close to a Java, and Jumbo Java?Again, the SR is probably closest to the Java. The Bionix would be the Jumbo equivalent, imho (although it is probably an even more "extreme" mpc).

What do you think Lester Young would have played if he played one?Probably the SR. But the Custom was available back when Prez was playing, and he played other things.

Not sure what you're referring to there...

Also, what holds in the spiolers, and is you cut of the spioler and leave the baffle, what happens. They wedge in, and have been known to blow out under extreme playing situations. I'm not a spoiler fan. I think the mpcs are fine without them.

Thanks Mike, thats the sort of info I was looking for. I have only played Brilharts and Links on my tenor. After not plyaing for a while and nearing the 1 yr mark of playing again, its time for mpcs experiments.

How does the Quantum fit into things. What would it be comparable to?
Anything close to DuKoff D or Ms ??

The jpg I am refering to appears to be a scan of a page from a Runyon catalog or other promotional material. I is not on the web site. It shows cross sections of 8 mpcs, showing the shapes of the baffels and chambers; and has a brief note under each such as " medium high bafle, smaller chamber" etc. It would be helpfull to be able to read more of the printing.

I've not tried the Quantum, but a number of other folks here have. Basically, it's a high-baffle, pseudo-bullet-chamber, pea-shooter.

And I think I have seen that jpg you mention. I'll poke around on my hard drive...

I would reserve the "pea-shooter" classification for the Bionix and maybe the XL/Smoothbores. Quantums have medium bores/chambers that do not taper down to a smaller bullet like most high baffle mouthpieces. They have a round nose where the baffle stops. As such, they sound like a medium-large chamber. Of course, it depends how you blow them. I take less in my mouth on them to darken them up some.

Yep, thats the chart, at the bottom of the page.

Seems like the Quantum is similar to the old Level Airs? and maybe the new ARB metals?

Would a bionix or XL be close to the Dukoff Ds?

How about facing length/ Are Runyons on the short or long side of things?

Seems like the Quantum is similar to the old Level Airs? and maybe the new ARB metals? Not really. The old LevelAirs had flat, "step" baffles. The Runyon Quantum more closely resembles a bullet chamber, with the edges rounded off.

Would a bionix or XL be close to the Dukoff Ds?Yeah, probably.

How about facing length/ Are Runyons on the short or long side of things?Mojobari and Paul C. are refacers who are familiar with the Runyon facing curves, but I think they're generally medium to medium-short facing curve lengths.

The Runyons are of a "medium" facing length.

The sopranos run about 18mm, the altos 20mm, tenors 22, baris 24mm.

The tenor mouthpiece now known as the Runyon SR was played by Chu Berry.
