I've just got hold of an Evette Schaeffer Master alto, s/n 62xxx. Stamped on the neck tenon is 'W Germany'. I know Keilwerth made some recent Buffets, but this seems a bit older. Are/were there any W German makers other than Keilwerth? Were Dörfler & Jörka East or West German? The left thumb rest is a large black plastic button, so I guess it can't be too old (and obviously post-war) - judging by the case I'd say 60s.

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Well, after carefully checking saxpics' site I became more and more certain this is a Keilwerth, so I posted a question on the B&H forum. It still hasn't appeared, but a couple of days later I got an email from Buffet asking for pics; as I don't have a digital camera I sent the ones from the eBay listing and shortly after received this message:
> Your saxophone has been manufactured here in Nauheim/Germany at Keilwerth
> in the year 1968. It is identical with a Keilwerth New King. Keilwerth
> made different saxophone models: King, New King, Tone King and Toneking
> special. The King and New King were standard models. The Toneking
> saxophones had extra features such as additional mother-of-pearl finger
> inlays and a more sophisticated engraving. But the body was identical, all
> saxophones were made for professional players, there were no student
> models. The New King was made until 1982.

So there we are, question answered - and I got a JK for a very good price - but like all good research, it throws up further enquiries: has anyone else heard of a JK E&S? Has anyone else got an E&S that they're now reappraising in the light of this? Does saxpics want pics??!
