I just started playing an alto sax. It came with a 4C mouthpiece which I am assuming is the customary Yamaha that comes with many of these instruments. I had much trouble getting notes such as G and lower. Then, when I reached the point of frustration, I tried a TENOR mouthpiece which I had laying around and believe it or not, I could hit most of the notes, even low C (some of the time) without much problem.

Now I know this should tell me something about the kind of mouthpiece I need. But I don't know enough to know what to do. Can anyone recommend an alto mouthpiece (and reed #) that would give me the results I'm getting with the tenor mouthpiece which is a Brilhart Personaline L7. Any help would be much appreciated.

in terms of reeds...it deepends... one factor is how loud u play and what kind of sound u want to have. Most beginners start out with "soft" or "light reeds" because of the fact that they can produce a sound easily and as u advance u'll want to get a harder reed because u'r tone will improve and so will u'r breath suport
my advice stick with a soft reed
I don't know if it will help, but I started out with a lavose soft reed
I hope u find one u like!
