I've been playing now for about 10 months and I still can't get vibrato. I've been practicing the jaw vibrato for several months now and I can't get the control and speed down. I've been using the studies in paul coats page. I have a *5 brilhart mouthpiece with 2 1/2 reeds. Should I change my setup to help learn? Or is there an easier style of learning jaw vibrato?

Seriously, though, just keep at it - it will fall into place and become second nature.

It's a funny thing about vibrato, man. When it comes together for you, it will feel perfectly natural. Then you will have to remind yourself *not* to use vibrato all the time, because you do it naturally.

Hang in there! 8)

For some reason, I learned vibrato very early on. I think it was because a teacher showed me how to do it and implied that it was the way to play a saxophone. Then it took me a long time to learn how NOT to use it. To this day, I sometimes find myself using vibrato subconciously. It can be a nice effect and helps warm a long tone, but be sure you use it only when you want that sound.

Ttenor28,

I read through Paul's articles a few weeks ago to help me with a student of mine. When I came across the vibrato article, it went through the exact process I used in college. Just like with any other aspect of the sax, the most important thing to remember is... First you learn the technique so that it comes naturally, then forget about it and play the music. In other words, once you can do the excercises slowly, then faster and faster and you have them EVENLY, then you can apply it to the music as appropriate.

Keep it up, don't skip any of the steps and before you know it you'll be like Zman and you'll have to remind yourself NOT to do it.

Good Luck!
