i just got one of these for alto and would like to know how runyon gets these to play altisimo so easily? the notes just pop out with almost no effort at all.nothing else i have played does this this easy.those wanting to do the lenny picket thing should check one of these out. plays a lot like a lakey otherwise and looks like one inside too. i still like the XL better but this mpc will work for me for rock and motown work

It does not surprise me at all that the mouthpiece plays altissimo so well. What surprises me is that it does so WITHOUT sacrificing good response in the low register, AND without intonation going completely crazy, AND without squeeks and chirps and loss of control. The mouthpiece still plays well in all other areas.

Over his many years, Mr. Runyon explored every aspect of mouthpiece design, pushing each facet of design to the very edge and beyond. He found where the limits were, and which could be overcome. I don't know of any other mouthpiece designer that has produced such a wide variety of mouthpieces. In the Runyon line is everything from the very good student model 22's, which sound good but play easily, and low priced so that just about any student could have a good mouthpiece. Through the more advanced Model 88's and Finesse for concert band and classical, the Customs for general playing, and it goes on and on.

And any time he was in his studio, if the lights were on, so was his Peterson Tuner. Good intonation was Mr. Runyon's number one priority. "If you aren't in tune, nothing else matters."

I tried a Bionix on Tenor. I thought some of the Lakeys I tried were better for altissimo. Still, Santy Runyon was a masterful mouthpiece designer.

I just can't play the darned things! I think I'm doomed to never sound good on high baffle mouthpieces....

I just got an Bionix 8 for alto... but I'm not sure about it yet. It feels real stuffy in the lower register. I initially tried it with a Rico Jazz Select 2.5, and then a Vandoren ZZ 2.5 (both brand new), but with the same result. With the same reeds, my Runyon Custom 7 plays very freely, as does my Dukoff D6. My only thought is to try and get hold of some softer reeds to test it out on. Any ideas before I send it back?

I'm currently trying out some Runyons from WWBW - I'm really amazed how good the alto Bionix 8 (plasiticover 2.5) sounds on my Superba I. I'm pretty sure its going to be a keeper. I was expecting something wild and hard to control, but it actully can sound very pretty with a nice complexity to the sound. I can play it easily the full range of the instrument - soft or loud.

I'm also trying a tenor Bionix 9 with my Mark VI - I really don't like that combo. The low notes don't speak well and I'm not wild about the sound anywhere - that one's going back. Maybe it works better with a larger bore horn like a 10M or something? Maybe its just me.

I've never been unhappy with any S. Runyon piece I have ever played or owned. Mr. Runyon was a real genius in mouthpiece design, no doubt about that.

the bionex is allready a good mpc for contemporary playing however i thought it could be just a little more powerfull and brighter so i put the spoiler from my xl in it and took it on a r&b gig. all i can say is WOW!!!!.RUNYON should offer this option for this mpc!! call it the super bionix!
