View Full Version : MC Gregory Value??
Hey all.. I just found an old MC Gregory Los Angeles Mouthpiece for Alto that I had forgotten I had picked up somewhere. It is a 5A20. I've looked up some info on these pieces and have seen some advertised for some decent money. Do I have something more valuable than I thought? I wish I could play it now to see what it sounds like, but I'd wake up the whole house.... guess I need to wait til tomorrow morning to see what I've got. I've never played it, it was in a case of an old sax I bought. Just curious to hear any input on these pieces from anybody that knows anything about them.
Todd,
I may be interested in it if you want to sell it. I have a tenor 5A20 that came with an old Conn a friend got. While not a jazz screamer, it seems pretty versatile with a smooth sound, good response at low dynamics yet can be pushed to play loud. I've always wonder how the alto's play.
We're talking about the MC Gregory LA model, right? The Master models and Model A are different beasts and I think more sought-after.
Email me at mmaida@sbcglobal.net. Or just post your impressions.
Interesting....I just did a search on ebay and the only one I found was a completed auction for a a LA model and it went for $176. I just played it and it's not bad at all. Good sound. Not as loud and edgy as the Cluade Lakey I've been using, but a good jazz sound, would probably be good for section work.
Check out Theo Wanne's Resources page. He has some good info on these...as good as you'll find anywhere I could think of. The Gregory was a nice find. Paul Desmond played one. The info that Theo has explains what you're getting in the various models they made.
I have a Gregory Los Angeles alto mpc (4A 16, but it plays more like an 18) that I bought from Theo. It's a nice dark, smooth sound, but I'm still on the hunt for either a Master Gregory or a Model A. The LA mouthpieces, though nice, were actually made as a "cheaper" model - but, if you find a good one they can be fantastic.

I've got a MC Gregory Hollywood 5A 20M tenor mouthpiece I'm trying to unload. I found it during spring cleaning and have no recollection where I got it over the years, but must have been during a brief experiment on tenor. Seems to be in good shape. Some whitescuffing at the tooth plate but no gouges or dents. Serial Number is 192. It has the gold band at the bottom and a narrow gold band toward the top of the mouthpiece as well. Any thoughts on a reasonable price for this piece?
thanks

Low Blow,
When you decide on a price on the Gregory Hollywood tenor, let me know. I had one years ago, but it got chipped. E-mail me at fjcorapi@aol.com. Thanks.
