Hello

On a local forum someone asked about trumpet and would like to about some models for beginners.

Yamaha 1335/1335S - $560

Jupiter JTR-300L - $325

These are the local prices. There are also other models sold by different stores like Bach, King, Getzen but more expensive (at least Bach and King). They don't advertise their prices online (and some stores will not tell you even on the phone. I'd like to know how are the above models for beginners?

Thanks!

I teach middle school Band and Yamaha trumpets have SERIOUS valve sticking issues. If a first valve isn't moving - 95% of the time it's a Yamaha trumpet. I switched many kids to Holton trumpets a while back. But NOTHING beats my 1960's Olds Ambassador. You can get one for $50 on e-bay.

Good Luck

A note of background, first - I played trumpet from about 11 until abouit 26, to include university music major and professional performance. I have also taught trumpet.

I founded a wind class in our local school two years ago and we bought all Yamaha instruments. IMO they are the best for the price you can get. Very good and very reliable.

I'll add, however, that I had a private student a couple of years ago who had Jupiter entry-level model that was a bronze/copper content and look, and it was a very nice horn. I don't know what they paid for it but his father bought it off the internet at a decent price.

(BTW, I don't disagree with jentone one bit, but we didn't have the sticking valve problems his students had.)

Gary - Do you know if the Jupiter entry model is the same as the one I wrote? Are the Yamaha trumpet you got the same entry model as the one I wrote? If not, do these prices look reasonable for trumpets that will be good for beginners?

I play clarinet and some sax so I don't know about trumpets, but there are just very few clarinets that will be good for these prices locally.

Thanks!

I like Gary have played a fair amount o trumpet and also teach trumpet lessons, and the Yamaha student horns and all the rest of their horns have been great. Sticking valves is an easily fixable issue. Right now, all my students are playing Yamaha or Getzen trumpets. The Getzens come at a great price used or new, and you will NEVER EVER have a valve problem with their horns. The same valve block is in their student and pro horns, and a number of custom trumpet builders have used Getzen blocks in their best horns.

The Jupiter can be a pretty good value also, but it isn't a to commonly seen trumpet around here, since this is a huge Getzen area in stores, same for Yamaha

Getzen, Bach, Yamaha, King etc student horns can be found all over used for 200 or less in GREAT shape.

Let me say this again. I've been teaching 11 years - MIDDLE SCHOOL. Yamaha beginner trumpets have terrible valve sticking problems. As do most of there beginning level brass. I've talked with many techs and this seem to be a common theme. The valves on the beginner horns are made with similiar tolerances as Yamaha Pro horns; HOWEVER, beginning students DO NOT keep their instruments clean and oiled.

Others are clearly established SOTW members with legitmate opinions. I speak from a daily often frustrating opinion with regards to Yamaha brass.

OK,

This person told me he found a used Yamaha trumpet model YTR-2335 in very good condition for $235, and he is happy with it.

Thanks again for the help!
