After playing a Meyer 4 with Rico 2's for 20 years, I was looking for a change - the glowing reviews of Runyon's in SOTW and Charlie A's competitive prices convinced me to give it a go.

I ordered a Custom 4 and am playing Rico 2 1/2s on it. Throwing caution to the wind I ordered the clear red one 'cause I think it looks cool and matches my red pads (Stage craft don't you know) My initial reaction is very positive: My upper register is definitely clearer and more in tune. Upper stack notes burst out and the overall responsiveness is very impressive. It's much brighter than I was expecting - it turned my tone from a somewhat nasal, old fashioned sound into something more Paul Desmond like - which isn't necessarily bad. This is one powerful mouthpiece. My volume like, doubled, effortlessly. It's a real confidence booster. Also, for the first time in my life I can hit a G3 and many of the other altissimo notes pop out with authority!

On the Downside:
I seem to have lost much of my ability to play subtones below a C1As others in this forum have pointed out, the ligature that comes with it, blows (and not in the good way). Naturally, none of my other ligatures fit it. I called up Runyon to complain that even when cranked all the way down, ther was still a fair amount of reed movement. The very nice lady who answered the phone said she'd send me a replacement lig even though I bought it through Charlie A.I think I ordered too thin an opening - I just went with the equivalent listing from the Runyon compatibility guide. I get the sense that to regain some of the dark color I need to open up the tip to a 5 or 6. Charlie was willing to send me two to try provided that I put both on my card knowing that I'd send back one, but unfortunately, I didn't have that kind of flexibilityI ordered the spoiler option, but frankly, between the power of the mouthpiece and the boldness of the Super 20, it was just too much! I can't imagine myself needing that much volume ever!
My teacher, a bebop player, who plays a HR Link 6-star, was intrigued enough to try it out, but the sound was way too bright for him - although he did like the power and responsiveness.

So overall, I'm thrilled - it'll probably become my regular mouthpiece from here out. I'm also really happy with the support I got from Charlie A and Runyon as well.

Questions for you-all:
1) Can I send it somewhere to have it turned into a 5- or 6-opening? What is the cost for something like that?
2) Do you-all recommend those protective sheets I've seen for sale to prevent teeth marks? I haven't noticed any scratches after two weeks, but after 5 years?

Thanks for all of your advice,
Larry

Larry - I had a red Custom 9 for my Super 20 tenor for a while a couple years ago. They are very good mpcs, and look cool on the silver neck.

Used to be that Runyon would open up one of their mpcs for $20. Give them another call and ask about it. And yes, the bite patches are great. I use the clear ones from Runyon (made by 3M, they're the same ones sold under the Selmer name). They protect the mpc and give your upper teeth better grip without getting in the way. Have Runyon send you some when you get the mpc opened up.

Have them lengthen the facing some and you will most likely recover your subtone ability too. You can also try scraping or drilling your reeds.

I believe that Runyon now charges $25 to reface their pieces - $20 for the reface and $5 for return shipping.

i would move up to about a size 7 facing .i have no problem subtoning on mine. the custom is a great tenor mpc and very versatile too -covers a wide range of styles .the red does indeed look good on the silver neck. try a vandoreen alto ligature on it. works great .much better than the stock. i use a harrison but no longer made . rovner ok but i like the brass ligs a little better on the runyon

For alto the 7 seems to be the most popular in the Custom, with about 40%-50% of players playing that size. For tenor, it is the 8.

For ligature, I use the stock Runyon lig. It allows good vibration from the reed. But you might want to try a Rovner. A Rovner that fits a standard clarinet mouthpiece will also fit the Runyon Custom Alto Mouthpiece.

I used a Rovner clarinet lig on my tenor Custom.

For tenor,I would actually recommend even bigger tip opening;#10-#14 (.103-.118).Subtoning will be easier and you get much fuller sound with medium to large tip openings with medium (2 1/2) reed.

Thanks to all those who posted suggestions and encouragement here - I just got my mouthpiece back with the tip opened to a 7. It was also "lengthened" somewhat as well but I'm not sure exactly what that means.

The result is great: I've got the dark tone I was looking for back while still retaining the Runyon's better (for me) ability to play clear upper stack notes and altissimo. It's like having two mouthpieces in one: I can lay back and breath out beautiful subtones or hit the gas and sing like a bell on the high notes.

Does require more air across the board though - that's just something I'll have to get used to I guess.

My service from Runyon was exceptional - special thanks to Paul Coats for all of his advice and help.

It was also "lengthened" somewhat as well but I'm not sure exactly what that means. It means that the facing curve, where the rails start to curve away from the reed, starts a little further back. It allows more of the reed to vibrate, and makes it easier to hit low notes. Glad to hear it's working out.

Here's another ligature suggestion: try a Consoli Ramplig. www.consolims.com for info. www.wwbw.com for the best price.

One last thought - after you get used to the more mpc, you could send your old Meyer off to one of the great refacers, and have it opened up some. You may be pleasantly surprised by the result.
