Most pictures I´ve seen of Cecil Payne show him with a Lawton metal mouthpiece.Does anyone know which chamber and tip he played? Reeds? Just interested.

It's a Lawton metal , 8starB with Bari plastic reeds.I think they are mediums to med.soft.
Cecil's bari is an older Yani.
Ever hear Cecil play flute or alto sax?Check "Birds Night Out" on Savoy with Phil Woods and Frankie Sockolow.A live Bird tribute from the old Half Note Club in NyC.
Cecil is a great composer to.The tune Cerupa is a masterpiece.
We used to play with with Cecil in Jersey at the jazz club on the Fort Dix base back about 15 years ago. What a beautiful human being.
He recently did some stuf on Delmark with Eric Alexander that is REAL nice!

Cecil plays flute on "Delilah," one of the tunes on a CD he did with tenor Eric Alexander. What grabs my attention is how modern he sounds on all the tunes - bari or flute. If I live that long, I would be happy to keep playing and sounding as good.

Cecil's Yani is an 880, I believe.

For what it's worth:
CP once told me he took the hardest synthetic reeds and sanded then down to a very soft tip.

Cecil does play a gold plated lawton 8b and bari plastic reeds with an older yani bari that is battered and been in and out of pawnshops for years. i love Cecil since the old Brooklyn days to New Jersey and back. for him it as serious as your life. you have a horn be a prepared musician and go that's it! no shortcuts. wonderful man and stories that kept me up many times of the golden years with cats that are gone. he plays a yamaha 61 alto with a gemienhardt flute with fluid chops galore. an incarnation of Pres on alto in my opinion hearing him in his living room,Augie's and Small's. did i mention i love him madly!..._________________Bird lives!!!
