Hi All. I hope you can help a new poster.

I bought a used Alto sax 23 years ago. I never knew anything about it then apart that it was a " selmer Sterling ".

The Sax is brass clear lacquer and has the Selmer Lyre emblem , ala the 60`s Amps with Sterling and foriegn underneath.

I`ve trolled the internet from holalulu to hades for a lead on this Sax.

The serial number is the lowest I`ve ever seen on any instument " 64".

I`ve been lurking for ages and the only thing I can work out is that it`s probably a student/marching/school horn. I was going to sell it a couple of weeks ago but instad I took it to work and have been playing every day. Funny that my other horns are a 1935 10m and also an Elkhart Soprano which I bought last week.

I reckon "saxpics" has a couple of pages from an old selmer london catalgue. which " Don Mackrill e.mailed him re KarlMeyer that might shed a little light on the matter.

thanks for the ears cats. :)

If it is a Selmer, it is a pre production Selmer, Pete would be very strongly interested in a picture I think, as would I. These are the saxes the Henri Selmer made before he was independant of Adolphe sax. There wouldnt be any chance of you sellign ti would you? they aren't in extremely high demand, and are not incredibly valueable I do not beleive, but I am just a Selmer fanatic, as well as a saxophone fanatic that likes to have nice examples of saxophone history. I dont have much cash right now, but maybe you would sell it for what I have. :)

I`m very sorry but I`m playing the thing at work now for at least an hour.

I`ts a selmer alright. I have no idea how old but I reckon 50`s 60`s maybee even 70`s. I bought it when I was 19 , I`m 42 on friday Aug 29th

It`s in very good nick as I always played tenor in the band and only used it for sloppy ballad intros and solos.

I will try to send " saxpics" a snap or two in the next wee while so he can post it on his site. I reckon It`s a Karl Meyer stencil. It`s actually a very lovely sax to look at and to play . The closest I`ve seen to it is the Pennsilvania Tenor on saxpics site , although the sterling has next to no ornamental engaving.

the real mystery is the serial " 64" which is on all the back of most of the key`s

pre production selmers were made MUCH before the 50's, this was probably made in the late 1900's, perhaps in the very early teens.
