I'm looking for a cheap bass clarinet, low Eb flat is fine, resonite/plastic body is ok. Was thinking of a Bundy/Buescher or the like. I'm looking at putting a Charles Bay neck on it when I'm done. Does not have to be in great working order, as long as all the parts are there, nothing is overly damaged and it plays in some way shape or form. How much I'm prepared to spend depends on what it is, so let me know what you have!
cheers

New?

I would not suggest doing it but I can't talk, considering I just bought a no-name sax, but the Woodwind bass runs for 900 ish USD. Preferably, get a yamaha, or a Selmer 1430p, for 1500, but thats as cheap as they run new.

Please contact me off-line, I have an excellent, completely restored and modified (including re-angled neck) hard-rubber Robert Malerne bass clarinet for $900, including an excellent refaced mouthpiece and floor peg.

Actually, does anybody have a source for floor pegs?

My peg is at its max extension and it just works with regular wenger chairs. I fear the day I run into a tall chair.

Is your peg mounted to the bell or the body?
Also, I have to ask....why not use a neckstrap? I've only found a floor peg to be necessary when playing bass clarinets having range to low C.

Body mounted peg. I occasionally use a strap, but I have problems with straps pinching my neck and giving me headaches. I've switched to harness for tenor these days and can't see using a strap for an extended period with a bass.

Try a bell-mounted peg -- it will give you some additional height above the floor.

I think you should carry a phone book around with you.

Carl:

Take a pair of dial calipers and mesure the diamater of the peg you have. Go to a REAL hardware store with the same calipers and measure some drill rod. Buy the drill rod that is the same diameter as the peg you have. Cut it to the length you want. Voila.

I would suggest the Vito over a Selmer 1430P. I find that vito plastic clarinets (basses in particular) play much better than their Selmer US and A counterparts.

Yes, a Vito is a great idea.

I've got a Vito E-flat alto clarinet that I'll sale for $250. Plays great. Sets behind my desk drawing dust. Just let me know.

Beware the Vito's they don't play particularly well in the second register. Spend a bit more and go for an older wooden model and your Bass experience will be far more pleasant.

I recently tweaked a customer's plastic Yamaha bass clarinet, and although very similar in design to a Vito, it played very well in all registers, surprisingly so. I would certainly recommend trying one before plunking down money for a Vito, Selmer USA/Bundy or a more expensive wood instrument in a good state of repair.

Vito makes Yamaha's entry-level bass clarinet and Yamaha makes Vito's entry-level alto and tenor sax. it goes beyond similarity :-)

kevvieg said "Vito makes Yamaha's entry-level bass clarinet ...."

I don't think that's true any more, as I understand it, Yamaha's current student bass clarinets are entirely made by Yamaha in Japan and the design is slightly different from the earlier (Vito clone) models.

But I could be wrong (as Nixon once said)............

I could have old information....(wouldn't be the first time I was wrong and it won't be the last).

Yamaha basses USED to be made by Vito.

The latest model 221 is all Yamaha, and is a great playing student bass....
