I'm a beginner ( 5 years) that unfortunately due to poverty, have never had any lessons....
I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about tonguing... like how much tongue to use (I know I should use the tip of the tongue.... but how much?) on what part of the reed should I touch with my tongue? Are there different kinds of tonguing of different styles?
thanks.... :lol:

saxomophoneguy2000,
There are lots of good articles right here on Saxontheweb. For starters, check out:

Tonguing styles? :|
Well, I guess if you mean like... Softer or harder tonguing. Accenting... Legato, smoothly...
Or.
Like in a beginner jazz book I was reading a few weeks ago, it was making a point about how classical music tonguing is like Tah - Tah - Tah but jazz-like (smoother) is like Dah - Dah - Dah for (quarter-ish) notes.... o.o;
(( Whoa, sorry if I don't make sense. :? I word things so they make more sense, but my grammar/real English is swoosh. ))

see if you can get hold of a copy of larry teals 'art of saxophone playing' - its about $15 but it contains all the basics of developing good tone and technique and is well worth it.
Just a head's-up. Anyone can certainly chime in, and your thoughts are always welcome, but you might want to know that this post is over two years old.

Yup, this is an old post. You may have not seen my message in the Beginner's Announcements and FAQ (http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=29986) -- New sub-categories have been added to the Beginner forum and I'm moving all the threads into their respective sub-categories -- I'm starting moving the really old ones and gradually will move the newer threads.
sorry about the inconveniences.:)
