Anybody heard the new CD by Andy Snitzer, Sugar? I bought it on an impulse and am really enjoying it. Plays Sugar and some other Turrentine-influenced stuff in pretty much straight ahead mode. I really like some of the diminished-sounding stuff he throws into the changes. I gotta figure out how he does that........

I bought it a few months ago and I really enjoy it, too!...
Andy Snitzer plays with the Manhattan Jazz Quintet on an album called 'Teen town': fabulous!! this the album in which I first heard Andy Snitzer (after seeing him on Paul Simon's tour..)

I think everyone should take a listen to Andy. I love his song arrangements on his smooth jazz stuff. He is good on the straight ahead stuff too.
He has a real unique approach and a nice sound. First time I heard him, he gave me chill bumps with some of his lick. That doesnt happen much to me any more.

Yeah, in an age when so many players sound alike, Andy's sound and style identify him in two or three notes. Kirk Whalum's like that, too.

Yeah, I really like Andy's latest album too. I really like his sound. He's got this turrentine meets brecker style.

I just heard his work for the first time, on an album called "Dave's True Story" on Bebop Records. His tone was right there, and didn't suggest anything smooth-jazzy to me. The album of mostly originals is straight ahead, with a nod to swing and the great American songbook as its roots. The vocalist, Kelly Flint has a fine voice and a solid sense of time. All in all, I wish I could hear the whole package live sometime. Snitzer's tenor work makes a real contribution to the group's sound.

Whoops. Just checked their website and learned that the Dave's True Story work was recorded 10 years ago. All the more reason for me to check out Snitzer's more recent efforts, however.

Andy is killing. He's heavily influenced by Sandborn. His smooth jazz cd's are killing. Great arrangments, a nice sound, and some interesting and not typical sneaking in of straight ahead references. I listened to him really heavily for about a year.
He was the Rolling Stones horn player for a great many years, hence his real rock more than smooth jazz feel. Rick Margitza got him that gig.

Andy Snitzer is an amazing sax player and a great human being.
But a quick FYI, Margitza did not get him the Stones gig. He auditioned as part of a horn section.

I was talking to Rick a couple of years ago, and he pretty much said that he got him the hookup(they are apparently friends). I think Rick knew about the audition, and hooked him up. At least that's the impression that Rick gave me. I could be wrong though.
Actually, if i'd known about the the almighty edit funcion, I would have edited that out, as one never really can tell how stuff goes down behind the scenes.

Hey Guys -
Scott told me about this, thought I'd weigh in for the record. I love Rick, known him for a long time, but factually we got connected to the Stones gig, as a section (Mike Davis, Kent Smith and myself), via the Stones accountant and Chris Botti. I'm pretty sure Rick wouldn't have passed that work on if it came to him first ;-). Anyway, talk to you guys later......

You're top notch Andy.
I said this before, but I would have edited that statement out if i'd known how to at the time. I hope I didn't cause any undue stress on you.
I honestly don't know what I was smoking when I wrote that.
Sorry again
Jim
ps. Sent you an email.

I bought "Sugar" as a result of finding Andy on Jody's website. I love it, too, although I usually prefer alto to tenor.
Good stuff, Andy.
(I don't know whether Sanborn is an influence, but he's my favourite alto player.)

yes, i love the song "you've changed". his talent never ceases to amaze me and from what i hear he's supposed to be a pretty awesome guy. i was listening to james taylor's "how sweet it is..." and the sax player sounded just like snitzer --- it was sanborn. props to andy for being able to emulate such a sax giant so effortlessly.

I'm really a nobody as far as anyone out there doing it on a national level is concerned, and he's taken the time to talk to me a couple of times. Classy guy.

Andy's a friend of mine. Just talked to him from the road. Next Wednesday on PBS, he will be playing. Some kind of tribute to Paul Simon. Not only is he an amazing sax player; hes a great person as well.
