I'm considering either a Custom or Quantum in an 11 or 12 facing (.109 or .114). I'm looking for something that can cut through amplified music. Right now I'm playing a Lawton 8B (supposed to be .125 but measuring closer to .115) with Rico Royal 2.5 or 3 and it suits me pretty well but I'm finding the mpc is fairly reed fussy.

Also, has anyone ordered from International Musical Suppliers? They're selling Customs for $50 and Quantums for $66 so I may get both for the price of one Custom on the Runyon website.

thanks,

I have both Quantum #14 and Jaguar #14 on a Couf bari (Keilwerth made horn).

Quantum is a nice, bright piece but easy to play.I rarely use the spoiler but with it its really bright.Only thing that bothers me a bit with the Q is that there is not much core to its sound but othervise its a good piece for Rock and R&B.

Jaguar is a great section-type mouthpiece with solid sound and easy to play. Not really bright though.

If you want the Lawton type of sound, check out steel Berg 1 chamber mpcs.I have Lawton 7*B and Berg 125/1 sms and they are quite similar but the Berg is easier to play.

I play a 12 metal Quantum on my Martin Magna bari. Just through very nicely. I'm the bottom (duh!) of five horns in our R&B band, it gives a very nice sound, especially in the lows. I love it. Although I haven't tried the Jaguar on the bari I'm playing an 11 on the tenor. Just got it last week and I'm really digging it. Bit sound, but nice and dark as well as smooth. Thinking about trying one on my bari.

I the past 2-3 years, I've played a Delrin Q 11, Delrin Q 13, Metal Q 11 and a Jag 11. I'm currently using the Jag for Big Band. For R&B (electric band) I would switch back to one of the Quantums and use a light Spoiler (a filed down Spoiler). Qs cut better, but I do not care for the bottom tone as much. All my pieces have been hand finished, but they still retain their original basic sound.

Thanks for the help... I've ordered a Custom and a Quantum so we'll see how they go.

Got the Quantum and Custom the other day. Had to send back the Custom because the rails were WAY different in width and the mpc was warped along the length (when you look down along the table). I played it for a few minutes thought and it sounded ok. The rails on the Quantum are a bit different but I chose to keep it. Another minor beef was that the cap that came with the Q was way too big. It will fit on a large rubber mpc so the Q is swimming in it. They stuck a couple of pieces of velcro inside to try to make it fit but it's still too large.

The Quantum sounds thin but is quite loud. I didn't realize how dainty it was... wow. I thought i got a tenor mpc by mistake. Actually, while I'm at it could some of you Q owners out there verify some dimensions for me. I'm measuring an overall length of about 13.6 cm or 5 3/8 inches and a table length of 8.4 cm or 3 1/4 inches.

Luckily my Rovner ligature fits on it because the stock nylon one is very crappy (on the Custom too). The screws go in crooked and look like they'll strip in about a week. So far I'm mildly impressed with the sound (for the $ spent) but very unimpressed with quality control. We'll see what happens when I get my replacement Custom but so far, I don't see what all the fuss is about over Runyon mpcs...
