After a 6 year hiatus, I've discovered that 2 of my saxes are in need of a few new pads. If anyone could possibly suggest of a local repair person that they have been too, and seem to do good work, I'd greatly apprieciate it. :D

Dear Meth,

A great tech has just returned to the area.... Jeremy Miller has formed "Brewsters" in Hollywood - It's named after his father, Bruce Miller who ran Lytle Music for over 25 years before he died and he taught Jeremy all he knows.

I knew his Dad and I know Jeremy quite well - he's an excellent tech, honest , fair and has good prices. Lots of local guys are coming to him already. I've seen Carlos Averhoff there as well as Gary Cambell and Kenny Million. I'm sure he can help you. (And, BTW, I have no ties to his shop other than being very happy with his work). You can contact him at 954.920.2919 Mon - Sat.

Thanks Barry! I'll definitely give him a call the next time I'm up in that section of town.

Well, I supposed he's a good repairman, but unfortunately I've been calling since Friday, and to no avail. I left a message on the machine on Saturday, and another one today, asking for directions.

I think I'm just going to break down and bring my horns to Sam Ash and hope they don't get mistook for 3rd year marching band Vito's.

I'm sorry you've been having trrouble... that hasn't been my experience. I wonder if he's away on vacation or something.....

He really is worth it.. I'd give him one more try before going to Sam Asch...

Hey guys, I'm new to the Delray Beach area, and asked this question under the "Who We Are" thread below. The responses I got steered me to
Saul Fromkin and Laura King at American Music in Jupiter. That's a bit of a drive from Miami, but it's got to be better than Sam Ash.

I hope Jeremy surfaces soon, as I have several horns needing some work.

Any advice on where to hang out, sit in, etc. to meet some players and get involved in the local music scene? I'm looking for weekend work doing casuals, jazz, blues, rock, etc.

Just spoke to him at his shop - turns out he just changed phone companies and he's been having many problems with the phone service. No call waiting and inability to retrieve messages.

He recommends just keep trying till you get thru. The phone company has promised numerous times to fix the problem and swears they're working on it. In the meantime, just use persistence in getting thru. It its really is worth it...

Welcome to the area!
Being in Delray you're close to Ft Lauderdale and Hollywood - there are a number of open mike nites near you & that's a real good way to get to know the local scene. I'm down in Maimi but will do some homework about what's around.
In Hollywood, my favorite places are O'Haras and the Sushi Blues Cafe & Blue Monk Lounge.. check them out!

I'm in NJ, but have family in Pompano Beach so I'm somewhat familiar with the area between Boca & Lauderdale having been there many times.

Do yourself a favor and take that 2hr trip up to Jupiter and have Saul Fromkin work on your Horn(s). He's originally from NYC where he had his shop on 46th or 47th street before "retiring" to florida several years ago.

Over the years, Saul has worked on many famous players horns including Dexter Gordon's and I also understand he may have even trained Roberto (Roberto Woodwinds NYC).

I've never met or had Saul do any work on my horns, but, my repairman has known him for over 30 years and has utmost respect for him and his work!

The overhaul on my Mark VI is almost complete. I brought it to Saul at American Music in Jupiter. Saul was in a terrible car crash before the sax returned from getting relaquered. He underwent rehab for quite a while...I told the shop to take their time until Saul felt up to it. I had a loaner horn from them; Greg the manager took great care of me with that, so time really wasn't an issue with me.

Laura is no longer there, but they brought in Mark Vandermark...I saw some of his work online and was very impressed. Mark is a perfectionist. He started working on the horn, Saul returned to the shop and is working on the horn with Mark. I asked for Noyek resonators and Kraus springs...they said no problem. The main thing is that Saul is in good health...I hope working on my horn is good therapy for him. He's one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.

It's worth the drive to American Music. You can speak to Saul or Mark at the shop. They'll treat your horn like a work of art. I can't wait to play it when I get it back. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Barry,
I got my 2 Conns that I brought over to Jeremy a few weeks ago, and he did some top notch work. Definately worth the 40min drive to Hollywood for me.

it is great too here about saul fromkin again.he had one of the most honest shops in manhatten's 48th.st musical mecca i had the pleasure of dealing with. yes, he tought roberto everything he knows.except humility and some better judgement on certain things!_ i guess i'm old fashioned because charles ponti of 46th.st was my main repair man. by the way saul,s shop was called art-shell. a third story walk up in a delapidated brownstone.you could also count on rod -baltimore whose owner is rod and son for years. man, rod stills see's me once in a blue moon and remembers my lessons in his studio and dealings as a newcomer dealin' :!:

For a while, Saul was working here in Sarasota, Florida. He was the only man I'd trust with my Selmer. It was quite a disappointment to learn he was moving to Jupiter. I'm still inclined to drive out to Jupiter to have him service the horn.

I know this is an old thread, but I am in the miami area, I have a selmer mark vi in pristine, perfect, mint absolutely like new condition, I don't trust just anyone with it. It needs a few tiny adjustments, just a couple of cork pieces to reduce noise, mainly in the G#, that apparently have fallen off, and I was wondering, does anybody recommend someone in the miami area, or north, i dont mind driving, ft lauderdale, etc. I just found two places in miami, ANDRES SANTANA WOODWIND REPAIR and MANUEL PEREZ WOODWIND REPAIR. Does anybody recommend them, or know of anyone else?

I picked up a horn in Miami that was repaired by a guy in the Bird road-Red Road area (SW40st and SW 57th ave). It could be Manny Perez but I can't find my old address book. If you can tell that is Manny by the address you have for him, I would say he is a good repairman. He did the repairs on one of those old clunker Conn baris (keyed up to eflat only) that I couldn't believe he got to play. Nice guy and el habla Ingles.
