OK. I want to move into a jazz mpc for my soprano. I'm currently switching between a Morgan ProTone and a Yamaha 4C. Both fairly closed pieces. I've been reading about the Vandoren V5 (S35) and Selmer SuperSsession (I or J facing). Any suggestions? Which is better?

Well, sorry, I can't really tell you which I like better, as I haven't played a super session. I have played the vandoren, and I do like that piece... but my main purpose of posting is to second your question... What say you all about the differences between the SS and the S35?

I'm not trying to be a wise-guy here, but the question of which mouthpiece is better than another mouthpiece is endless . . . and unanswerable. It is the same with saxophone manufacturers and/or models. It ALL has to do with what the individual player likes, and NOTHING to do with what I or some other poster likes. It is just too personal and there are too many variables for any of us to answer your question(s). All we can offer are opinions - and those are not very helpful to others who have different embouchures, horns, musical concepts, and needs.

Most posters know my position on soprano mouthpieces - Super Sessions in J are the best I've ever played. Does that mean they are the best? No, because I may well come across something else that plays better for ME. But so far, I haven't - and I've been playing and buying for many years.

I recommend that you either go to a store that has both in stock and will allow a test OR buy both pieces - then you can test them and make your own decision. That's what most of us have done over the years - and we have boxes of best-players (or we took a risk and bought something that didn't quite meet our needs) that were eventually superceded by some other hot ticket. Good luck in your mouthpiece search. DAVE

They are worth trying. Consider also a S25 for more stable pitch control if needed. I like HR Ponzols/Barones/Baris around .065". All 3 are similar (appear to be from the same blank).

I've not played the Vandoren, but I do have a Super Session I. It's a very nice mouthpiece. But my favorite is the Tenney Link. To me it has a richer sound and is a bit easier to play.

Mojo makes a good point (as usual): considering what you're used to playing, it may be better to split the difference and try the Vandoren S25 or Super Session H or I facings first. The S35 and SS J facings are pretty open.
