Yeah so I've been to a couple of big band performances on campus and its something I really want to do later on. Can any one point me toward some good stuff to listen to. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything from previous threads.

For a modern big band, check out the Maria Schneider Orchestra, TONS of woodwind doubling. Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Akiyoshi/Tabackin, are great. Count Basie swings more than anybody! I gotta stop before this turns into a book! Good luck!

I agree with all bands mentioned here, and I'll add Stan Kenton's band, Harry Connick Jr, Bill Holman, Bob Curnow (sometimes hard to find, but well worth it, imho), Frank Mantooth, GRP All Stars, John Fedchock, UNT's One O'Clock Band, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, and The Tonight Show Band (Doc Severinsen).

I know there's a lot here, but just pick a few and get them. If you don't like them, sell them on amazon and get a few more.

Happy listening,
Chris S
