i'm in the market to buy a clip on mic. but here's the delema. I want to get a good mic mainly for performance but also to do some recording on. the mic that i want to get is a AKG C 419. i've kinda settled on thay after a good amount of research. the thing is i've been given the opportunity to use to other mics somewhat indefinatly (until my connection with this good friend and mentor is lost through death or what have you). the two mikes are an AKG C 418 and a sennheiser mike wkich i dont know the model, it looks somewhat like a cheap regular vocal mike with a hooked plastice clamp that you stick a corck into to keep there. (sorry for the bad description, the mike actually sounds fairly good). anyway...... my question is. is the difference in sound quality of the C 418 and sennheiser so much less than the C 419 that i should spend the $160 CND on the 419 sooner as opposed to later.

thanks.

P.S. I will be purchasing a mic (perhaps not the C 419) in the future for my own use and touring and whatnot but my question pertains to the next couple of years while i am doing a lot of gigging somewhat freelance. Ty again

I have used an AKG C419 alot on stage and had good results. But recently switched to an SD-systems LM89 I got for low money. This mike is far superior to all clip-ons Iīve used so far. You also can use it for recording. But itīs really not cheap.

The C418 is most likely the same mic element as the C419. This is meant to be a lapel clip-on mic for a speaker. As such, it has an omni-directional pattern, which may not work as well for sax. Can't comment on the Sennheiser, although it sounds like the clip-on drum mic. This may actually work well, although it might be lacking in high end response. The Sennheiser clip-ons designed for horns are very good, but also very expensive.

I like the sound of the Shure Beta98. It seems to reproduce "my" sound better than other clip-ons I've tried. A trumpet player that I work with has a Samson Airline wireless that he uses and during one his solos his battery crapped out and we put my Shure on his horn. What a difference! The Shure had a much clearer sound than the Samson. I don't know about the AKG, but with the Shure you can replace the cable if it craps out or you could convert it to a wireless system if you wanted to in the future. The only thing I don't like about the Sennheiser is that it looks like the clip slips on, while the Shure clip is like a clothespin covered with rubber that makes it easy to switch between different horns.
